Another chilling excerpt from the superb book "Roofstaat" (Robber State) by Ewald Vanvugt, on the horrors of Dutch colonialism.

“In all seriousness, the Council for Suriname considered a proposal to abolish the death sentence in 1744, because the slaves saw this punishment as a blessing – for them, death came as a friend. Irrepressible renegades could better be threatened with the amputation of their tongue and ears, after which they would be “scarred unmentionably”. This proposal was ultimately rejected, but some of the Council members had clearly grasped that, for many prisoners, life was less appealing than death.”
