I lived in the rue Saint-Antoine, which turns into the rue de Rivoli a few blocks past my apartment, in 1998-1999, and we couldn't open the window because of the diesel fumes and traffic noise. A world of difference today.

Extreme heat is the deadliest weather-related hazard in the U.S. — and kills half a million people globally every year. Unfortunately, only 37% of Americans recognize heat waves as a serious health threat.

Fascinating piece. I've always wondered what the larger context was for my grandfather, who played soccer (an "unrecognized minor sport") at Rutgers in the '20s and '30s.
Soccer team roster in the Rutgers yearbook from some time in probably 1930, listing the players' names and their not so great record (2-1-1).

Francis Mer, French minister of finance, days before heat killed 12,000 older people, said “To solve the problem of health insurance, I see only one solution. Quite simply, we need to eliminate the last year of life. Because that’s the one that costs the most to the social security system.”

A thousand excess deaths and counting. This number will go up, and will do so dramatically. It's very likely that many of those who've died haven't been found yet. And with extreme heat coming back by the weekend, many vulnerable populations have not had enough of a respite.

Speaking of books discourse, delighted to report I finally got one of these heartfelt invitations. Honored! (BTW, if you're interested, you can find the book here: press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/bo...)
A screenshot of an email that reads: "Dear Richard C. Keller,

I hope you’re doing well. My name is Emily, and I’m the Organizer of BoozyBookLovers, a dynamic book club community based in Washington, DC, known for engaging discussions and thoughtfully curated book selections.

I recently came across Colonial Madness, and what immediately stood out to us was How the history of psychiatry in North Africa was used as a tool of both control and liberation.. The way you explore [insert key theme, character dynamic, or narrative strength] gives the story a depth that feels both impactful and highly discussion-worthy. It’s the kind of book that naturally invites readers to pause, reflect, and share perspectives, something our community truly values."
