The relentless surge in Portuguese house prices gained further momentum at the start of 2025. Annual and quarterly growth both reached near 35 year highs of 16% and 4.8%, with initial data showing extraordinary rises are likely to have continued in Q2.

Portugal's resident population rose by a little over 100k or 1% in 2024, driven by strong net migration. Recent surge in immigration is a net positive for the economy but is increasingly a hot topic in PT politics and society, amid surging house prices, saturated public services etc

Ireland's April goods trade data showed a large reversal of the recent jump in exports, led by pharma exports to the US. It could mean pharma companies largely exhausted near-term possibilities for frontloading of exports, or otherwise correctly read that pharma tariffs wouldn't be applied quickly

Can we please stop labelling yesterday's shenanigans as reciprocal tariffs? What we got yesterday was unthinkable, ugly and hugely unfair tariffs, but referring to them simply as tariffs will also do.

Great stuff from @gerardbrady100.bsky.social - an highlight, the pharma exemption leaves Ireland with one of the lowest effective rates out there, despite having a very large goods trade surplus with the US. Ofc, results would be very different without the exemption, which can't be taken for granted

As expected (despite many last-minute twists), the PT government fell yesterday and the country is headed to new elections. These are the fourth in 5.5 years, something the country didn’t witness even in the very unstable First Republic in the early 20th century. www.publico.pt/2025/03/11/p...

Tariffs don’t have to be imposed to wreak economic harm – threats are enough. So the recent flurry of announcements (and postponements) by the US have increased trade policy uncertainty, making it less likely that companies will invest. 1/7 Full report: www.oxfordeconomics.com/resource/tar...

Portuguese government likely to fall after today's confidence vote in Parliament, which would set the stage for a new snap election in May (3rd in little over 3 years) The quick rise of the far right has marked recent elections and continued political shenanigans don't bode well for what's to come

Serviços causaram a queda.

The latest Economic Sentiment Indicator survey for the EU is out, and I can only describe it as crap. Employment expectations down, unemployment up and prices expectations higher as well. I don't like using the word stagflation lightly but this sure looks like a pretty bad mix.

There has been an uneven transmission of ECB rate hikes due to a greater predominance of variable-rate loans in the case of firms. This meant they suffered a faster pass-through but firms are now poised to see a faster fall in interest costs, which are now only stabilising for households

Yesterday's forecasts from the ECB staff served to reiterate the growing eurozone economic gloom: the ECB staff started to produce point forecasts for GDP growth and other variables in Q4 2013. Yesterday's GDP growth forecast (for 2027) was the weakest final horizon forecast since then

All key measures of EZ inflation expectations are now at levels consistent with the ECB achieving its 2% target sustainably. What's more, the high inflation episode has re-anchored expectations at a higher, target-consistent level after some worryingly low readings before and during the pandemic.

Is France facing a Greek-style sovereign debt crisis? No. At the height of the € debt crisis, Greek govt was spending almost 20% of all its revenue on interest payments. France is spending less than 4% (even less when subtracting interest paid on debt held by central bank).
