Can you help with this PhD Research Project on Useful Hedgerow Plants? rhulpsychology.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_... 🧵6/6
A poster advertising an online questionnaire about useful hedgerow plants. The background is a picture of blackberries and the text reads: “Can you help with a PhD Research Project on Useful Hedgerow Plants? Based at Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and Royal Holloway University of London, I am researching knowledge and attitudes to hedgerow plants across the UK and I need your input. Can you identify edible plants in hedgerows? Do you go foraging? Do you use plants for timber, fuel or crafts? Whether you have lots of knowledge on this topic or none at all your perspective is valuable to the research. Scan the QR code to fill in the survey. It's quick and easy and your response will be very helpful. Thank you! More information about about how answers will be used and what will be done with the data can be found at the start of the survey. If you have any questions or would like more information please contact: anna.lewis.2023@live.rhul.ac.uk “. There is a QR code in the bottom left corner.

Finally, later research will be focussed on the transmission of traditional knowledge – is it being passed on to younger generations and are young people gaining the possible benefits of connecting to nature and their local area? How is knowledge gained - does social media have a role to play? 🧵5/6

The project will also look at why foraging in hedgerows is popular now; why, in the age of the 24hr supermarket, blackberry picking is still a key autumn activity. This will help understand whether a tactile, embodied relationship with the landscape can impact wellbeing and sense of place.🧵4/6

The project started as an MSc thesis based in Surrey and found 107 plant species being used with 274 unique uses; from nettles for hair tonic to hawthorns for ketchup to rose hips for itching powder. The PhD will look across the UK for plant usage and record local diversity and plant traditions.🧵3/6

Text from red pepper magazine which reads:
Postcapitalist Cities:
Towards a Common Urban
Future
Oli Mould
Manchester University Press
Fundamental to any blueprint for revolutionary change is knowing
what type of alternative we want. Oli Mould does just this.
Drawing upon history,
making use of contemporary case studies,
Mould illustrates
how our urban spaces are shaped by the needs of capitalism but
also embody the foundations of a post-capitalist future.
