An interesting #galactic paper by Cameren Swiggum (@mac0598.bsky.social) et al. came out today! ☄️🧪 Extending previous work that showed most young star clusters near to the Sun came from just three regions, Cameren shows that actually *all* nearby clusters come from just three regions!
Backwards orbital integration of star clusters near the Sun in their work. Notice how all the grey dots originate in three areas. (Their Fig. 1)

Paper of the day: Alexis Quintana et al. have made a census of OB stars within 1 kpc (~3300 light years). #galactic ☄️🧪 Aside from being a useful reference catalog, they also derive some very interesting things - such as a 0.67 solar mass per year star formation rate for our galaxy!
Their figure 4, showing the surface density of OB associations within 1 kpc of the Sun. Sco-Cen, Orion OB1, and Vela OB2 are clearly the nearest; Cepheus is huge, but about 1 kpc away.

This NIRCam image reveals the OMC2-SE region, showcasing a vast expanse of interstellar gas and dust. The left side is dominated by wispy, cloud-like structures in shades of green and gray, suggesting the presence of cooler gas and dust. Scattered throughout are numerous bright stars, some with visible diffraction spikes. On the right, a denser region exhibits a mix of red and white nebulosity, indicating areas of active star formation and ionized gas. A particularly bright star shines at the center of this region, illuminating the surrounding clouds. The overall image has a dark background, highlighting the luminous details of the nebula.

And here's the real magic part! We get data from pulsars that carry information on the Faraday Rotation along the signal travel path. So encoded in here is rotation measure induced by ionosphere, interplanetary medium and ISM. We can use the GPS data to correct RM values to be astrophysical!
Four tile image showi9ng four plots. In each plot the x-axis is time, and the Y-axis is the value of rotation measure in units of rad m/s^2. The four plots represent four different pulsars. Their signals oscillate with amplitude increasing in a correlated manner, showing that the rotation measure is experiencing a similar effect across all lines of sight, due to the ionosphere becoming more variable as a result of approaching solar maxima.

The darker area is a turbulent, dense, magnetized, star-forming gas cloud. It's so dense that it blocks light from background stars. Smaller dark clouds dot the image, also the location of star formation. In the center of the dark cloud is a red feature, outflows from a cluster of protostars. 4/
In the image of space, the yellow dotted line forms a fat U shape, surrounding a cyan-colored area that is much wider on its right-hand side. Within this area, straight red dotted lines indicate structures within the ionized hydrogen, oriented chaotically in multiple directions. Fitting into the curve of the U shaped ionized hydrogen region, the dashed-line of green indicates the shape of the infrared-dark cloud. At the base of the U curve the orange circle surrounds a red and white protostar cluster appearing to spray upward and to its left. To the right of the ionized hydrogen region, a small dark area is surrounded by a dashed-green line, highlighting another infrared-dark cloud.

Baby stars are messy eaters. This diagram from a review article illustrates the complex interplay between protostars, magnetic fields, and the surrounding gas on large and small scales. 🧪🔭 1/ Frank et al. 2014 ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2014prpl...
Three-panel illustration showing the disk scale area around a forming T Tauri star at 0.01 AU, 0.05 AU, and 5 AU.

The 0.01 AU panel shows a closeup of the star with three rope-like accretion columns flowing into the surface. There are dark star spots on the surface of the star. Arrows show stellar winds blowing off of the star.

The 0.05 AU panel shows a more zoomed-out view, with the star and the innermost portion of the accretion disk visible. The star is at the center and the disk fills the outer third of the frame. There is a gap between the star and the disk. Connecting the two are the accretion columns of magnetized gas.

The 5 astronomical unit panel shows the flared accretion disk and jet. The star is now too small to see. The disk extends horizontally and flares up vertically, making a wedge shape. A columnated jet rises up above and below the disk. Arrows show the gas moving up vertically and magnetic fields twisting around the column-like structure.A two-panel illustration showing the envelope scale area around a forming star at 100 astronomical units and 500 astronomical units.

The 100 astronomical unit panel shows the area around a clump in the jet. A line traces a backwards C shape that fills most of the panel. The line is labeled "bow shock". To the left are a series of x and o shapes representing the pileup of gas. The o shapes are labeled "forbidden lines" the x shapes are labeled "H alpha emitting layer".

The 500 AU panel shows a wider view of the disk, jet, and cavity carved by the variable-velocity, clumpy, precessing jet. The flared disk extends horizontally and flares up vertically, creating a wedge shape. The edge of the disk is labeled "cavity wall". Clumps of material extend above and below the disk in a line at its center. The clumps are slightly misaligned from each other horizontally. The topmost clump is labeled "bow shock".An illustration showing the 1-parsec scale area in a molecular cloud forming many new stars. There are two darker areas. The one at the bottom right is labeled “core” and has three hourglass-shaped cavities carved out by new stars. The dark area at upper right is labeled "cluster". It has four hourglass-shaped cavities. They are labeled "active outflows". Two larger hourglass-shaped light areas are at the top of the frame. They are labeled "fossil outflow cavities". The lighter areas at the outer edge of the frame are filled with abstract, wavey lines. They are labeled "turbulence on large and small scales." Solid wavy lines with arrows are labeled “Alven waves driven by turbulence”
