For two decades, we were told the humanities are moribund and we only need STEM, and now we're reached a point where the biggest innovations in STEM are raising fundamentally humanist questions about the nature of personhood and identity that require philosophy, art, history, and religion to answer.

Time to start explicitly saying what used to be implicit (and what I regard to be the ethical limits of this sort of thing). From a paper I'm working on for next week's confererence.
Screenshot of Word document about the history of Chinese literary genre fu, with some main text and footnote text visible. In the first footnote a sentence is highlighted: "In translating the text, I have not once used AI or machine translators (I would rather resign from the profession than start doing this). "

I had the great honor of meeting Nikki Giovanni in high school. She spent a whole class session with us, had lunch with us, and then gave one of the most powerful talks I have ever heard. We thank her for her insight, her power, and her graciousness. Now, may she soar on into the great unknown! 🕊️🕊️🕊️
