Teach your children about power dynamics and control, not just about the superficial ways sexual abuse and rape happens. We should be teaching social dynamics and human interaction skills in middle and high school because it influences everything. engagedorgs.substack.com/p/rape-uses-...

Yes - I understood that but was hesitant to add the details because I did not want to inadvertently add any additional confusion - it sounds like the majority of people polled were asked two questions to make sure they understood - and were onto it 🙂

I think Jane Doe was a “good victim” in that she did not have enough power to pose a definite problem, but had enough power to be used as an example of women taking up too much space/resources they perceived as theirs.

This book by Carol Karlsen makes the case that middle-aged women with some property and money, who defended it, were disproportionately accused, sentenced, and put to death for being witches. Or in today’s language women with no effs left to give ;) bookshop.org/p/books/the-...

It occurred to me that this dynamic has parallels to the witch trials in New England in the 17th century, in which women had access to inherited property and money and were empowered to fight for it… which ultimately made them ‘witches'

Gang rape is a tool to suppress power. I have not seen much about this perspective with regard to the Cornell Chi Phi rapists. I think they are reacting to a ‘trumped-up’ threat. engagedorgs.substack.com/p/rape-uses-...

When the justice system is set up to punish victims, instead of prevent harm, the death penalty is the logical conclusion. Happy to live in MA, where there is no death penalty, we have strong gun laws, low violence, and low incarceration rates. Our justice system is not set up as a revenue center.

State-sponsored murder… inthis case, to punish someone fordefending herself from sexual assault. WTF?!? Our justice system often fails by determining those with long-term system harm should take all of the responsibility for it. Because that is what violence is: the result of long-term harm.

I heard Gen McMasters this morning on NPR talking about how American helped “civilize” Iraq and even before it became offense, I threw up a bit in my mouth. We are entirely uncivilized - because what civilized person or society agrees with this - let alone executes it?

I blame the risk-aversion of MBAs generally plus the outsourcing of hiring to executive recruiting firms, who are inversely incented to pick ‘safe’ candidates. They don’t want to be fired for a bad pick so they pick someone defensivable and if that requires another CEO in 2 years, well more revenue.

I gave recently seen this happen to multiple amazing organizations that, as a result, lost relevancy, trust, and excellence. It is quite sad…. But the resume of the leader looked so good! 🙄

Rachel Happe @rhappe.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
This is because great leadership requires care and attunement to others - both incredibly depleting. Too many organizations hire “safe” leadership and as a result kind of stumble through because the leader doesn’t have the energy to be passionate about, and relevant to others.

Rachel Happe @rhappe.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Related, I have always thought leadership roles should rotate so that the career ‘ladder’ is more like a Ferris wheel. Leadership is exhausting and people need a break in order to stay relevant. We keep hiring leaders because of their prior leadership roles and are surprised when they coast.

It’s good to stay humble. We are only relevant while we are actively relevant. And that is ok. Life is not a straight line, either up or down.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

This is a fact. The data is unambiguous and the solutions exist. The only thing missing is the will to act.

Let’s hope you are right, but from my experience, the business model always wins and at the moment, it does not value individual humans let alone the value they create by influencing others. And whether you make or do, one needs money to fund the basic necessities of life.

Do you assume we will never be able to educate around this so we have to allow AI to supercharge this dynamic in ways that make it a million times worse? That also scares the crap out of me… because it feels like it will destroy us by optimizing for the capitalist system which cares not a whit.

I believe people are naïve about the influences on their thinking and behavior. If AI starts creating social/networked norms, it generates massive power over the way people think and act - without consent. That was the motivator for this post and construct engagedorgs.substack.com/p/knowledge-...

Individuals don’t even really get how much of their data is being shared between companies and how easy (with connectors) it is to do so. Salesforce contracts essentially force clients to use partner apps to receive the full value of their contracts by bundling in vouchers.

If I thought the tech companies would help people/society catch up / understand before they unleash things on us I might feel differently but they have given me no reason to trust them. Many have pushed things to the consumer market that are half-baked *because* there is less risk of being sued.

This is both quite interesting (and gets at something I have been thinking about with regards to human decisions) and scary as hell because i believe the vast majority of people will not understand how it operates and will simplify its potential for good while dismissing its potential for harm.

There is a silent negotiation and cultural rest going on and men are powerless to change it… and even though they don’t necessarily make the explicit connection, women are less likely to make the effort to flirt with men or make it easy. Men can no longer effortlessly connect with them.

Rachel Happe @rhappe.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
This is, culturally, why so many men are angry and reactionary. Women are finally able to act on the fact that relationships cost more in their emotional labor rather than add value (IVF and egg freezing has liberated them from anxiety). The ROI is not there. www.oprahdaily.com/life/wholene...
