I enjoy the absurdity of humanity. Perfect is boring. Things to say about communities, tech, culture, leadership, L&D, and social dynamics. Writing a book titled Control Is for Amateurs. Founder of Engaged Organizations. Prior, The Community Roundtable.

To combat the craziness in the world, I’ve been taking a drawing class with friends. Highly recommend! I don’t much like charcoal (so messy) but I really enjoyed this exercise in drawing negative space using an eraser. Pretty pleased with the duck. My cow needs some work 🐮

Gang rape is a tool to suppress power. I have not seen much about this perspective with regard to the Cornell Chi Phi rapists. I think they are reacting to a ‘trumped-up’ threat. engagedorgs.substack.com/p/rape-uses-...

Troy Jackson may not be as “dynamic” as Graham Platner, but he has plenty of support in Maine. (Although this picture is from South Portland so… no surprise)

What is up with all the Mahjong parlors opening up in my area? Given the way my mind works, I wonder how it relates to the political and economic environment we find ourselves in. Escapism? Need for community/connection? Interest in women’s only spaces? A place for wealthy women to “hide”?

I’m glad it did - apparently, we are not alone. That post got over 100,000 impressions (whatever that means) and 1,300 reactions 😳 Since no one wants my skills, I am rage gardening, drying petals for some yet-to-be-determined reason, putting up veggies for the winter, and embroidering. 😏

This is terrifying. I have declined retailer’s credit and loyalty accounts for years because I don’t want to give them my data - turns out, our retail goods are likely cheap because big retailers are selling our data. Now connected to our browsing history. 😱🤯😱 www.instagram.com/reel/DclVt1E...

This map does explain Trump’s last ditch effort to screw up the mail ahead of the midterms. He is pissed with Newsom - and California more generally, which has a lot of votes.

So much winning. Trump is under water in 40 states. And he hasn’t helped Republicans in Governor’s races either… www.newsweek.com/topic/map?ut...

Well, the economy sucks. I have received 59,874 impressions and 853 reactions to a LinkedIn post about how horrible the job market is for people with decades of experience. Our economy is broken when a this kind of experience and value is sitting on the sidelines. How can we harness it?

The mindset of the Confederate flag has morphed into the American flag with the thin blue line. I am not ungrateful for first responders but when there are no national standards for police, police are too often abusive. Regardless, they do not sit above and separate from civilians.

I keep thinking of @hcrichardson.bsky.social’s book, How the South Won the Civil War, when reading her daily letters. The Southern economy and, more than that, its social mores have pervaded American culture. It highlighted how much the legal, economic, and cultural norms influence each other.

And when I say, tax the rich, I am talking about people who have summer homes like this on Lake Winnipesaukee, which has thousands of these $10M+ compounds and where an ‘entry level’ summer home costs $3M.

One of the things I find appalling is the seemingly mindless use of plastic packaging and fibers in clothing. Take out containers drive me crazy and while we re-use them, why don’t we use standardized tins and plates/bowls made out of dried leaves like they do in India?

The extremely ironic result of Trump’s mind-boggling incompetence is that it may hasten the transition to clean energy. I am thinking about how to do this as a family; moving from a hybrid car to an electric, installing mini-splits and/or heat pumps, reducing plastic use/packaging, etc.
From Heather Cox Richardson: “Foreign policy scholar and diplomat Philip Gordon, who served in the Biden White House, wrote: "U.S. acceptance of Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz is an extraordinary outcome only made conceivable by an administration that squandered legitimacy, alienated allies, attempted regime change in a war it had not adequately prepared for and that is being forced to accept a catastrophic outcome without viable alternatives."

He suggested that "in other circumstances Iran's closure of [the] Strait by brazenly attacking maritime traffic and neighbors' civilian infrastructure would likely have justified and led to a united, global response-like the U.S.-led naval escort mission during the Iran-Iraq war, the global coalition that reversed Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1991, the multinational naval force enforcing UN sanctions in the Gulf in the 1990s, or the UN Security Council sanctions on the Iranian nuclear program in the 2010s-that led to the JCPOA."

"Instead," he wrote, "[the] US and other countries are now being forced to accept an outcome that would have been unthinkable before the war but seems to have become unavoidable because of it."

This is some effed-up dystopian shit. There is a maladapted subtext of glee to it all, with the implicit assumption that they will come out of the dystopia as the winners. 🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢 www.wired.com/story/leak-e...
“Leak Exposes Members of Peter Thiel’s Secretive ‘Dialog’ Society
More than 200 of the world's elites registered for a retreat whose agenda runs from panels on cult-building and sex to prepping for World War III. An associated app offers matchmaking.”
“A source separately provided WIRED with the registration list for Dialog's 2026 retreat, which names 222 people and records what the list describes as each registrant's membership status and attendee type, including “active member” and “guest.” The retreat is scheduled for August 12-16 at a venue near Dublin, Ireland.

The same data lays out a program of off-the-record sessions, including: “Money (Does?) Buy Happiness,” “Bring Back Nuclear,” “Navigating WWIII,” “Battlefield Technologies,” and “How’s Your Sex Life?” Other talks include “Build-a-Cult,” moderated by the founder of the Christian networking site Pray.com, and “Build-a-Party,” run by a former White House national security official.”

Headed to Fenway tonight for a New England love fest, but it will be hard to top the last time. Noah Kahan and his music represents so many, often seemingly contradictory things about New England (and life) and makes them beautiful.

This picture by Pete Souza, Obama’s White House photographer, jarred a memory of being dragged to D.C. for a protest and falling into the reflecting pool after goofing off… and being mortified because I was wearing white/cream clothing. It must have been this protest. www.upi.com/Archives/198...

I’ve been spending a lot of time recently “touching grass” with friends and family. Every time I poke my head back in, the news timeline is completely insane, but always in a different way. If we get through this, maybe Americans will develop some realistic expectations about ourselves…
