If the earned settlement proposals go ahead, they're looking at 10 years before they can settle, with £5,000–6,000 in visa fees every two and a half years. That means constantly saving for the next visa instead of living their lives.

It's called the Minimum Income Requirement, and it's an unnecessary burden on people at the very start of their adult lives. No one should have to choose between the person they love and the country they call home.

Many graduates start well below that. So couples spend years apart. Careers get planned around visa paperwork. Dreams go on hold. And most students don't find out until they're already in love.

This isn't paying for a service. It's what one our Head of Policy rightly calls "double taxation" — money taken from people who are already contributing, just for the right to stay with their families.

Some fees are up to 10x the actual processing cost. A settlement application (ILR) costs £3,226 — but only £310 of that covers the real admin cost. The rest is pure profit made on the shoulders of families and children

Brexit sadly expanded the number of people affected by this policy, but didn't change its basic nature: a policy that keeps people apart, makes love unaffordable for most, and needs to change as soon as possible.

The letter also rightly highlights the Home Office's inscrutable decision-making and the sheer cost involved - unaffordable for most of us, and one that still doesn't guarantee people the chance to live with their loved ones in their country of birth or where they have lived for a long time.
