We now have the details of the federal 2026 budget proposal, and it spells the end of IMLS. The request is $6,000,000 to "conduct an orderly closeout of IMLS." Whatever happens in the 2 court cases would be moot if this passes. bookriot.com/the-2026-fed...

I've seen a lot of anger and sadness about terminated grants & am so angry & sad for those colleagues. I'd like to hear more about the junior scholars who submitted proposals that will never be reviewed & who do not have data to continue publishing from. I'm done wringing my hands - what can we do?

HUGE NEWS. The judge in the case where 21 state attorneys generals sued the Trump administration over dismantling the IMLS just issued an injunction in favor of the plaintiffs. This is good news & the judge further indicates that the plaintiffs have a STRONG case here. bookriot.com/the-latest-f...

This is terribly alarming for all kinds of memory institutions, but also support from IMLS has been so important for so many scholars. I spent much of my time as a doctoral student working on IMLS-funded research projects that made my education and training possible. www.npr.org/2025/03/31/n...

SCOOP: DOGE notified the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) today that the entire staff is being put on administrative leave effective immediately, I’ve learned from an agency source. They’ll be cancelling huge swaths of grants/contracts and starting a Reduction in Force (RIF).

I just did this as well. Legislators need to hear from you, they need to hear that you understand the illegality of this action, and they know that you’re looking for them to take concrete steps to restore constitutional order of checks and balances. You can do it!
