Birds and theology, sometimes at the same time. Sometimes I pretend to be a Piping Plover.

...what if that's why Jesus commends her faith? She's going to keep having the same pointless repetitive arguments with guys who aren't really listening for as long as it takes to help her daughter. That's the only faith she has any time for. Maybe it's the only faith that really matters.

...and then I thought, what if the reason she's so quick with a snappy comeback is that she's had this conversation so many times already? Because she would, wouldn't she? She's probably going to everybody who claims to be able to heal, and nobody has any time for her, and she just doesn't quit.

A Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting... Matthew 15:22a, NRSVue This time I suddenly had the thought: Wait, was she REALLY shouting? Like, shouting shouting? Or it did just *feel* like she was shouting because nobody expected her to be, like, moderately assertive?

Excuse me... a tiny Lapwing has toddled into your feed. 🥹
A fluffy Lapwing chick stands on a path with oversized legs and tiny feet, looking as though it's setting off on an important little adventure. Its soft cream, brown and black down contrasts with the beautifully blurred green background.

I couldn't care less about TB's share price, my guy. What I DO care about is a serious problem in public health. Nobody wants to cooperate with authorities to find where outbreaks came from! Because the person/company/country that's the most helpful & finds the problem? ALWAYS GETS BLAMED FOR IT.

A red admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) is perched in profile on a purple flower, with its head pointing downwards. Its antennae and proboscis are visible. The wings are folded, but the patterned upper surface of the wings – with striking red, white and bluish accents on a dark background – is still partially visible. The underside is brownish, which serves as camouflage. The butterfly is feeding on nectar from the tubular flowers of a buddleia. The background consists of a soft, light-green and lilac blur (bokeh).

I assume it's also a certain amount of working in miserable heat and checking for ticks. And, there's a ton of skill required to identify native bees. It's good to see that being valued. (I can barely distinguish a bumblebee from a carpenter bee. I am *impressed* by people who can get to species.)

Yes, exactly! I am mostly familiar with this kind of work with regards to birds, but it's the same concept. If you haven't really thought about it, it can seem rather abstract. But in actual practice, somebody is literally out there counting bees, which kind of sounds fun.

One time when I was at this convention center, eating a boxed lunch outdoors, I saw falcons flying around. Needless to say, I now carry all my meals outdoors. (No, it's not always a boxed lunch. You pick up your plate and you walk out with it. People are confused, but they don't stop you.)

Today's #BirdoftheDay is all about #texture - something I really enjoy capturing in my art, such as with this quick painting of a White-breasted Nuthatch creeping down a fuzzy lichen-covered branch. 🪶 #BirdArt #SciArt
Illustration of a White-breasted Nuthatch creeping downward along a lichen-covered branch. This small bird has a pointy little upturned bill, white face and breast that fades to chestnut on the flanks, a charcoal gray cap and blue-gray back. Dappled sunlight illuminates its back half. I have absolutely had my professional performance evaluated at exactly this level, and not just in writing. It's so damaging, because there is no defense against "this annoys me", nor is there any way for me to act on that feedback.

I always think that if I get up before dawn to go birding then I'll have a wonderful experience and I'll think to myself, "why don't I do this more often?" I always end up drinking coffee in my car, vaguely fantasizing about more sensible hobbies that don't start until at least noon.

I'll never forget that moment, before vaccines were fully available, when so many people who were eligible in the first couple of rounds stopped caring about protecting people who weren't eligible yet. It was "protect the most vulnerable!" only as long as they thought that meant themselves.

Thanks for this! In my line of work, I see so many congregations that are still taking ineffective precautions against surface transmission, while completely ignoring the air. That early messaging really has a huge impact.
080
Plover Pastor @revbirder.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
We need to stop assuming that airborne transmission is rare/unlikely, and start teaching what airborne transmission actually looks like, so that people can take the kinds of precautions that are actually helpful, rather than wasting time on hygiene theater.

It is pretty wild watching the intersection of birding and public health, two of my major interests in the last few years, although only one of those was by choice. I imagine this is how public health professionals have felt this whole time. 😬

Maybe it turns out that the landfill is the source! But we don't seem to actually know that yet. Acting like we do know is not good science, and it does not help people make good decisions.
130
Plover Pastor @revbirder.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
This seems like the latest iteration of "it only kills people with pre-existing conditions". If the source of the infection is a landfill, then I can feel totally safe, because I would never go there. But it seems likely to have been something much more mundane, which is much more unsettling.

Hantavirus is in the country, but there have not been any confirmed cases in the province, apparently. There have, however, been many confirmed cases in a region that the couple visited earlier in their trip. It's rare, but known.

Plover Pastor @revbirder.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
Birding at a landfill usually means watching from outside, where you might not even be able to SEE any piles of trash, and the landscape is often quite pretty. You're not standing in a plague pit!!! This is awfully close to blaming the victim, and it's also bad for the livelihood of local guides.
130
Plover Pastor @revbirder.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
Finally, at least SOME consideration of the actual logistics of birding at a landfill. As far as I can tell, the entire justifications for the landfill theory is "going to a landfill is weird and gross". You don't actually go inside the landfill! www.nbcnews.com/world/south-...

Birders push back on hantavirus fears tied to Argentine city
Some guides and locals have expressed doubt that birding tourism in Ushuaia played a role in the outbreak that killed three passengers on a South Atlantic cruise ship.
150
Plover Pastor @revbirder.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
I don't think that's been confirmed, it's just speculation because going to a landfill sounds weird. The couple visited many locations that are just as likely, if not more likely, to be the source. Birding at landfills does not normally involve getting that close to the actual trash.
