Co-designing is a blast, and I think it's produced all of my best work that we've published through Bright Bard! Bonds Between is a labor of love from Emily, Bri, Lucas and I, and Trash to Treasure was equal parts Bri's love of magical girl media and my minigame design by the end.

Soon! Axolotls are critically endangered in the wild, so on October 15, we'll raise money for Adopt Axolotl, an initiative by the National Autonomous University of Mexico. And to help the axolotls defend themselves, we will give them GUNS, as we play Axolotl With A Gun by @brightbard.bsky.social
Announcement of a charity stream of TTRPG Axolotl with a Gun, raising funds for Adopt Axolotl by the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
The stream is announced for Thursday, October 15th, 8pm EDT, 5pm PDT, on twitch.tv/findoutproductions

The background shows a wild axolotl with mottled skin in the water, the back of the image mostly green due to plant growth. The axolotl is looking directly at the camera, giving the impression of smiling at the viewer.

Beneath it in circular frames are the headshots of the cast:
Andre Rivera, a Boricua masc person glancing at the camera, head tilted. Andre has medium length curly black hair underneath a green beanie, a mustache, and wears dark-rimmed glasses.
Faun aka Jess, a queer nonbinary person with the head tilted slightly backwards, looking at the camera in ¾ profile. Jess has a side shave and hair partially dyed pink and white.
Janis, a white man with blonde hair cropped very short, looking at the camera.
Mirm, a Samoan nonbinary femme with long curly hair, wearing glasses. Mirm’s eyes are closed and they are smiling and partially sticking out their tongue.

Also pictured are the logos of Adopt Axolotl (top right, showing the stylized outline of an axolotl’s head above a waterline), Find Out Productions (bottom left, outline of the face of a cat wearing a Carmen Sandiego style hat), and Bright Bard Games (bottom center left, a stylized B, shining radiantly).

Yeah, I think something for a walk would have to be memorizable, although it could be fun to have it be an audio prompt? Like you snap a CD into your walkman and the game prompts you every couple minutes. 🤔

Really for me it's the act of starting at an high-level experience (Running a campaign of Axolotl with a Gun or writing a 5 research-driven paragraph essay), and then deciding what granular skills and combinations thereof are required to achieve that experience for the person reading the book.

What I do now: Write a game book that (ideally) can teach an excited 10 year old and their slightly confused, maybe-played-D&D-once-in-college parents how to pretend to be axolotls with guns or trash goblin magical girls in the context of my game.

I've just been noticing a lot of the similarities in my thought process between what I used to do: Teach my 10th grade English students how to read, research, form a opinion, and write about it and then structuring a semester's worth of lessons about the necessary skills to do that. versus—

Jon Boo-yle 🎃 @residentbard.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Yeah, I think the analogy starts to fall apart a bit once we arrive at the actual act of teaching vs. playing a roleplaying game. I think the thing that struck me as most similar was the top-down lesson design method I was taught for planning K-12 units and lessons from common core standards.

What are the first few years of teaching for if not intensive playtesting? Legit though I remember sitting at our kitchen table as a kid helping my mom pack and repack activity kits for her education classes after she'd run them and was changing stuff up in response to her classes that semester.

D6 random manuscript encounters: 1️⃣Uh-oh! You need a pull table here 2️⃣Time to make a style decision (Roll again on punctuation table, PG XX) 3️⃣Past you: [WRITE SOMETHING COOL HERE] 4️⃣You Shift Keyed Too Close To the Sun 5️⃣This bit just rocks, actually 6️⃣You have entered the "holy fuck" zone. Good luck
A comment by me, reading: Uh oh! You've created the need for another pull table or two (Or a list that invites the GM to consider these questions during the other steps).

Of all the game OSTs I listen to while I work, Hollow Knight and Silksong feature the most often appearances. Sometimes it's nice to imagine I'm just chillin' with Quirrel in the City of Tears and writing while he broods.

Structuring your rulebook is functionally indistinguishable from structuring units and lessons as a teacher. Challenging your own implicit biases (Your knowledge of your game and TTRPGs/games in general) is essential to creating an accessible player experience in your game.

Axolotl with a Gun by a WIDE margin, followed by Terminus and LGBT over the last 4 years (though the AwaG and LGBT only released 2 years ago). Trash to Treasure is our 2nd biggest earner after AwaG, if not the most popular (likely because of the higher price point). Also: Pins. So many pin sales.

It's one of my favorite design spaces to explore! I think it's fun to observe and imagine magic in our everyday mundanities (and I think it helps us ground ourselves and think like artists). Terminus, Bonds Between, and I Crave the Loop all do a little bit of this kinda thing.

Bri and I wrote a little game called Missives from the Void for people to play in exchange for a free sticker and it's been the most charming thing in the world. A group of 3 children played it with us and watching them scavenger hunt for interesting items was the cutest thing I've seen all month

Yeah, I think it's really enchanting and carefully made fantasy. The characters have really rich inner lives and those are reflected in both their magic and the conflict in the world. The soundtrack struck me almost immediately, I've found it really unique and interesting, but I'm also a music nerd
