L'installation et l'entretien des ascenseurs coûtent cher. Pas étonnant que le Canada compte si peu d'ascenseurs par habitant. Or, autoriser une norme internationale pour les ascenseurs permettrait de briser l'oligopole - dominé par quatre multi-nationales - qui caractérise ce marché.

La Colombie-Britannique a légalisé la construction de bâtiments multi-résidentiels de six étages tout au plus avec une seule cage d'escaliers en 2023. Quelle est l'excuse derrière le silence de tous les partis politiques du Québec sur cette réforme nécessaire au Code de construction ?

Devant l'argument qu'un registre des loyers pourrait décourager la construction, j'aime répondre qu'il réduirait aussi l'opposition citoyenne à la densification et que ça serait une source de données super fiable pour étudier les dynamiques économiques du logement.

I will never get over the absurd arguments people made regarding aesthetics and neighbourhoods to oppose the REM de l’Est. And how cancelling it did not bring about some hypothetical better project. The east end is languishing in long commutes and uncertainty more than four years later.

En associant le logement subventionné comme SEULE solution à l'abordabilité du logement, l'Ordre des urbanistes rejette le rôle du zonage dans la crise du logement. Puisque l'Ordre vise une densité "idéale", elle contribue à la rareté des logements et donc à l'augmentation du prix des logements.

While this column is kind of all over the place, “upzone so developers will build a lot of new housing and landlords will be forced to compete for tenants on price” is exactly what YIMBYism hopes to accomplish.

Most recently, a Council member
introduced legislation to upzone a large majority of his district, meaning that the density would be increased considerably. And since he flew the flag of affordable housing and it was, after all, his district, the bill passed, despite many of his constituents being against it.
One of the five at-large Council members walked the streets of downtown Nashville touting how the Council had recently passed legislation upzoning hundreds of square miles.
When pressed as to how developers could afford to build affordable housing, a former city official said that the developers would not be able to build affordable housing due to the cost of the infrastructure. When pressed, a sitting Council member who voted in favor of the upzoning admitted that the city would not be able to cover the expense of the infrastructure.
So, in fact, the bill did nothing to improve affordability.
Now, to the current situation. New apartment buildings have shaken the rental market, as the city has overbuilt. Many of the new buildings are offering as much as three months free rent in an effort to lure new tenants.
Investors who own older buildings are forced to lower rents and eat three months or more rent in order to rent their properties, and rental rates have fallen. If they have mortgages, they are in trouble.
Coupled with the highest rates since 2001, there is no reason for a person to buy a home when free rent is an option.

I mostly agree here, I think the main problem is when AI is used to prevent your brain from going in a position of stress with new information, which is how learning is done. The obvious place this is happening is obviously school, but you need to keep doing cognitive work at your job

There seems to be a consensus building at the ICC that the 2030 I-Codes are going to allow four-unit buildings in the IRC, and now it’s just a matter of the details. One proposal presented today would only allow two units stacked on top of each other, so no three-fams/triple-deckers/three-flats.

The profitability of building housing depends on a bunch of factors. The price/rent they can get, certainly. Also construction costs, labour costs, interest rates, lots of other regulations. Edmonton construction slowed after a boom but they're still building:

It kills me that he still talks about putting bike lanes on “secondary roads” when those secondary roads *do not exist* in Toronto’s street grid (for the most part), Nothing replaces Bloor, Yonge, etc. Feels like a brutish power move, like he’s saying “I’ll kick you in the face and lie about it”.
