Future Trunks is screaming internally because more people reading Lonesome Dove will mean more people watch the TV adaptation and more people will be absolutely convinced that cottonmouths chased and bit someone they know to death somehow which, and I cannot emphasize this enough, DOES NOT HAPPEN

A young Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) on the crawl in the Pine Barrens today. This was a well travelled trail and some horseback riders passed through shortly after we gently shooed her off into the bushes
A subadult female timber rattlesnake, Crotalus horridus. And has a greenish yellow with dark chevrons across her back. She was very calm the entire encounter.

They really are harmless, the only time I’ve ever even heard of someone getting bitten is in captive feeding situations lol. Snake venom can be complicated but that’s another story😉 You may have heard of them referred to as “spread adders” or “puff adders”, no relation to the venomous Bitis arietans

It’s a young Eastern Hognose Snake, Heterodon platyrhinos. They technically have venom but, aside from being rear-fanged, the venom is mild and only is really dangerous to amphibians, which they specialize in. When provoked they puff up and hiss to look scary. They also will play dead. Harmless tho
