How I think that convo went: T: Dumocrats. It’s brilliant, right? You only have to change one letter! Sycophant: Well, two letters, but yes, brilliant! T: What do you mean, two letters?! You swap the e for a u. Boom! S: And drop the b. T: Drop the what? S: The b. You know, d-u-m-b. T: 🤯

Algorithms killed the spectrum of emotional valences. Everything now is set to 10. Bring back the eyeroll, the exasperated sigh, the hand wave, the shoulder shrug. Some stuff is just mildly annoying or blandly dumb. You don’t need to blow every emotional outburst on the mundane.

1871 newspaper. So weird to see something like this in print, but it was common back in the day. (TW: 155-year-old accounts of self-deletion.)
Tired of Life.
—Lorenzo Rogers, clerk in the post-office at Galesburg, Ill., shot himself on Saturday, and will probably die from the effects of the wound. Cause—his girl loved some other man better than him.
—John Bolin, of Brownsville, Neb., took a dose of strychnine, because he could not obtain "whom his heart loved most," a waiter in a hotel. John is no more.

My mom was a movie theater manager and let us go see RHPS every Friday and Saturday night at the theater for years. I saw it more than 100 times in the theater by the time I was in the fourth grade. I know every scene and song by heart. Happy birthday, Rocky!

When the power of wealth is wielded by sociopaths, the consequences are a matter of life and death. But the individual merits or kindness of billionaires are in fact irrelevant. No one should want to live in a society where one single individual can be worth $1tn, no matter their personal virtues: such levels invariably skew power, distort markets and sap our democratic ideals.

How long is a million seconds?

First, let me ask you a question: How long do you think a million seconds is? In terms of days, weeks, years, decades, or whatever.

Turns out it's 11.5 days. That's it. Less than two weeks.
How long is a billion seconds?

Now, how about a billion?

A billion seconds is 31.7 years.

So a million seconds ago was last week, and a billion seconds ago was 1993.
How long is a trillion seconds?

Okay, last one. How long do you think a trillion seconds is?

A trillion seconds is 31,689 years.

A trillion seconds ago, humans were still in the Stone Age. Writing hadn't been invented. Agriculture hadn't been invented. We were hunter-gatherers using basic tools.

I miss the innocent days of 1997 when “A deranged tycoon intent on destroying the world” was the premise for a far-fetched Bond movie rather than the bio of the richest man on earth in 2026.

The idea that this just happened to the Broadview 6 — forcing grand juries to indict by cajoling them in an elevator, vouching to the grand jury, and telling "no" votes to leave if they don't want to indict — is nuts. It's probably happening everywhere. And it means the law as we know it is dead.

Incredible line from a grand juror in the Broadview 6 case, who had just asked the prosecutors why they get "unlimited tries" to indict people they don't want to indict: "I heard this case like last week and I thought it was a crock of shit then and I still think it is."
MS. MECKLENBURG: Okay. I'm feeling the 09:29:526 skepticism already. Are you going to be able to7 listen with an open mind? Tell me the truth.8 GRAND JUROR: I -- no.9 MS. MECKLENBURG: Okay. Then you have to10 go -- 09:30:0411 GRAND JUROR: I heard this case like last12 week and I thought it was a crock of shit then and I13 still think it is.14 MS. MECKLENBURG: Okay. Thank you for your15 opinion for everybody.

Agreed. Haven’t enjoyed watching something with strangers this much in a long time. We laughed and yelped and grimaced together, and when the movie was over, we just started talking like we’d experienced something unique. Because we had. “Wt holy f did we just see?!?”
