1871 newspaper. So weird to see something like this in print, but it was common back in the day. (TW: 155-year-old accounts of self-deletion.)
Tired of Life.
—Lorenzo Rogers, clerk in the post-office at Galesburg, Ill., shot himself on Saturday, and will probably die from the effects of the wound. Cause—his girl loved some other man better than him.
—John Bolin, of Brownsville, Neb., took a dose of strychnine, because he could not obtain "whom his heart loved most," a waiter in a hotel. John is no more.

Sometimes I uncover gems in the news archives.
Booby trap set for burglar backfires on Findlay man
FINDLAY (AP) — A Findlay man became the victim of his own device to trap a burglar.
The plan backfired when he mistakenly triggered the device, which sprayed him with BB pellets.
Larry E. Smith, 40, an electrician at RCA Corp. in Findlay, was in fair condition Thursday at Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay after surgery to remove the pellets from his chest, the hospital said. Smith said he did not feel well enough to be interviewed.
He had rigged the device because burglars had broken into his home in January and took more than $1,000 worth of goods, but on Tuesday he accidentally tripped the contraption, which he had set up in an upstairs bedroom, Findlay police said Thursday.
The Hancock County prosecutor said he may present the case to a grand jury.
Smith wired the device to a ceiling light so it would discharge when the light was turned on, police said. It was pointed toward the door.
The device was made of steel pipe and was anchored to wood blocks by a heavy cord. Wire from one end of the pipe was connected to the overhead light, and the BB pellets were inside the pipe, police said.
"In my opinion, it is illegal," Findlay Police Chief David Clark said. "He was very fortunate. If a child had come in, it might have put that (blast) in their face. It was angled toward whoever would have flipped on that light switch."
Smith apparently forgot he had rigged the device and turned on the light, Clark said.
"Our concern was if the house had started on fire, or if someone had broken into the house and triggered the thing," Findlay Police Officer Roddy Smith said. "What if we had needed to enter the house for some reason?"
Police responded when Smith called for an ambulance, but were delayed in entering the house because of a rattling sound near the door. They found an aquarium containing a rattlesnake and a copperhead snake near the door.

After Sept. 11, 2001, one survivor’s story rose above nearly all others. Tania Head said she'd escaped the South Tower, lost the man she loved on the 99th floor and lived with lifelong injuries. But when a reporter began asking questions six years later, the story quietly unraveled.

Just listened to the @centuriespod.bsky.social episode on the Beverly Hills Supper Club disaster and it was very well done.👏 Still bummed about not getting to index the nearly 70 cubic feet of fed civil cases relating to it while working at NARA ATL. #ArchivistProbs
