These songs I ruminate on are
the blood curling around my ribs
echoing stories I don’t want to hear
of a beautiful ingenue I once knew
One I feel, I am losing

But I can still feel the hum of the stars
repositioning themselves in my sky

☯️ Also, I’m using polarities. Each pairing sits across from the other in the astrological wheel, and the energy of the signs functions as two sides of the same coin. So while the intent of the verse is the same, I don’t expect the signs to interpret the same meaning.

The full moon always pulls a poem from me and this is the latest installment 🌕
A poem by Maggie Devers
Full Moon in Capricorn

I made potato soup with chicken stock, butter and cream
And felt like a wealthy peasant
To know such bounty as potato soup

I read something and took a screenshot of it
And then it hit me in the face:
This is the way I want to write, and I can

I Googled when the moon would be full
Exactly
And listened to my neighbors cackle from their balcony

Everything we want is already here
Just waiting for us to hold open the door
And nod the way inside.

There’s are no rules in poetry, but sometimes a world with no rules feels terrifying. So I’ll give you one, and only one, and if it doesn’t resonate, ignore it. (There really are no rules.)
Poetry has no rules. With one exception →
Keywords: writing tips, writing inspiration, poetry, writing advice for poets, how to get published, how to be creative, how to be an artistThe one rule that transformed my poetry
The truth is your guide.
But don’t be afraid of a lie

Now it’s triggered
It was here to stay
If I was becoming a woman
I had to look a certain way
Clothing now more important
Than the games I used to play
I started to wish for boobs
I even began to pray!

Eventually we all had bras
And fruity glossy lips
But then came something else
I wanted those womanly hips!
Society was infecting me
With its binary gender grips

dance til death with me
let us light up this world one last time
before my hunger will have been forever
satisfied;
before the only remains of your existence
are smoke and ashes

I want to know you, long summer day
gelato-fingered savior, who I long for.
I want to know you, and I want to know
in my sunshine bones that the craving
is just as blissful as the full belly.

Can we all agree that poetry is a useful way to process growth and change? I'm honestly sh*t at all the other ways. If you want to hear me read this, check out One Poem Only 🍎 open.substack.com/pub/rembrand...
Inheritance, a poem by Maggie Devers

She tells me she likes the new side
Where they eat pomegranates all day
And her life
Sounds like an ancient poem
Chanted down the ages
To her at six.

I wonder if the myths are always in us
And we ache to relive them through art

She says meditate instead of pray
And Stracciatella instead of chocolate chip
And I think that’s a generational vernacular shift in the right direction

She holds the scrunchie open and pulls her hair though
At the final pass she stops halfway, a poor man’s bun
And I wonder what’s inherited and what’s instinct.

A poetry meme. Text reads- Choose your fighter: poet, madwoman. Image is of two Hollywood starlets that look exactly the same A poetry meme. Two classic Hollywood dancers posing with jazz hands The text: my inner angst masquerading as (between the jazz hands) poetry. A poetry meme. Two 1920s women in swimming suits, one standing behind the other, resting her arms around the other woman’s shoulder. Text on woman in the back: me. Text on woman in the front: the em dash. A poetry meme. Elegantly dressed woman sitting with her knees close to her chest, biting her fingernail looking slightly worried or pensive. Text reads: thinking about editing my poem for the literal thousandth time.

Propaganda I am falling for: an apple a day keeps the doctor away 🍎
Propaganda I’m not falling for, a poem by Maggie Devers
Laws make us safe
War is necessary
Our worth is determined by our usefulness
Children must be taught
Right and wrong

Productivity creates happiness
Sugar is bad
Babies are dumb
Intelligence can be measured
Empathy makes you weak

No pain no gain
The world is a cruel place
I don’t deserve to be happy
There’s more suffering than good
And art won’t save us.

A poem by Maggie Devers
Because that is all it is.
I want to know your process
So I can make it with you
The way you sketch until your nails are packed with graphite
And your warm hands smell of wood shavings and masking tape
I could hold them to my nose and die happy

I want to know how you change
So I can be there with you
As you chop off your hair
Let your eyebrows grow wilder and abandon heels for Birks.
Even your feet are now freeTell me what makes your heart grow
And mine will grow too
How you smell the top of a baby’s head watching the sun dip over the ocean.
There’s a margarita with salt in your hand
And the lime stings at your cuticle, but it’s a good hurt.

Show me the hidden parts of you
So I can see all of you
The way you shield yourself from criticism
Even your own. How you fight for everyone
But yourself. How you believe these parts are more hidden than they are.

Know I am here for the process.

🖋️ Your poetry is allowed to be exactly what you want it to be. 🌬️ Edit for yourself, and your readers. They want your unique, original voice. 🕯️ There’s no reason to limit yourself, if you like it, someone else will too. 💬 What’s a part of your poetry that someone has criticized but you adore?
Don’t edit your poetry to fit some editor’s wishlist.
Here’s why →

No.
So do it your way.

Keywords: writing tips, writing inspiration, poetry, writing advice for poets, how to get published, how to be creative, how to be an artistThere are no rules
1 Use “and” or “but”
or repeat words
or get friendly with noun-ing (gerunds).

2 You don’t need a title. (Ask Emily Dickinson.)

3 You don’t need stanzas or line breaks.

4 Tell me why it’s cliché to use clichés.

Keywords: writing tips, writing inspiration, poetry, writing advice for poets, how to get published, how to be creative, how to be an artist Art is the leading edge. Of all of it. It’s creation at its most pure. So never let anyone tell you how to do it. You’ll kill it, stone dead.

I know folks will insist we need ground rules, somewhere we can meet and understand. And I’m here to tell you—that’s the art—the thing you make where people can meet you and understand.
