These songs I ruminate on are
the blood curling around my ribs
echoing stories I don’t want to hear
of a beautiful ingenue I once knew
One I feel, I am losing

In the dead of morning I sleep in silence
But I can still feel the hum of the stars
repositioning themselves in my sky

The full moon always pulls a poem from me and this is the latest installment 🌕
A poem by Maggie Devers
Full Moon in Capricorn

I made potato soup with chicken stock, butter and cream
And felt like a wealthy peasant
To know such bounty as potato soup

I read something and took a screenshot of it
And then it hit me in the face:
This is the way I want to write, and I can

I Googled when the moon would be full
Exactly
And listened to my neighbors cackle from their balcony

Everything we want is already here
Just waiting for us to hold open the door
And nod the way inside.

There’s are no rules in poetry, but sometimes a world with no rules feels terrifying. So I’ll give you one, and only one, and if it doesn’t resonate, ignore it. (There really are no rules.)
Poetry has no rules. With one exception →
Keywords: writing tips, writing inspiration, poetry, writing advice for poets, how to get published, how to be creative, how to be an artistThe one rule that transformed my poetry
The truth is your guide.
But don’t be afraid of a lie
Keywords: writing tips, writing inspiration, poetry, writing advice for poets, how to get published, how to be creative, how to be an artist Your readers know when you’re glossing over something or only giving us half the story. Embellish if you must, but the truth is always more interesting.

Inheritance, a poem by Maggie Devers

She tells me she likes the new side
Where they eat pomegranates all day
And her life
Sounds like an ancient poem
Chanted down the ages
To her at six.

I wonder if the myths are always in us
And we ache to relive them through art

She says meditate instead of pray
And Stracciatella instead of chocolate chip
And I think that’s a generational vernacular shift in the right direction

She holds the scrunchie open and pulls her hair though
At the final pass she stops halfway, a poor man’s bun
And I wonder what’s inherited and what’s instinct.

Propaganda I’m not falling for, a poem by Maggie Devers
Laws make us safe
War is necessary
Our worth is determined by our usefulness
Children must be taught
Right and wrong

Productivity creates happiness
Sugar is bad
Babies are dumb
Intelligence can be measured
Empathy makes you weak

No pain no gain
The world is a cruel place
I don’t deserve to be happy

A poem by Maggie Devers
Because that is all it is.
I want to know your process
So I can make it with you
The way you sketch until your nails are packed with graphite
And your warm hands smell of wood shavings and masking tape
I could hold them to my nose and die happy

I want to know how you change
So I can be there with you
As you chop off your hair
Let your eyebrows grow wilder and abandon heels for Birks.
Even your feet are now freeTell me what makes your heart grow
And mine will grow too
How you smell the top of a baby’s head watching the sun dip over the ocean.
There’s a margarita with salt in your hand
And the lime stings at your cuticle, but it’s a good hurt.

Show me the hidden parts of you
So I can see all of you
The way you shield yourself from criticism
Even your own. How you fight for everyone
But yourself. How you believe these parts are more hidden than they are.

Know I am here for the process.

🖋️ Your poetry is allowed to be exactly what you want it to be. 🌬️ Edit for yourself, and your readers. They want your unique, original voice. 🕯️ There’s no reason to limit yourself, if you like it, someone else will too. 💬 What’s a part of your poetry that someone has criticized but you adore?
Don’t edit your poetry to fit some editor’s wishlist.
Here’s why →

Keywords: writing tips, writing inspiration, poetry, writing advice for poets, how to get published, how to be creative, how to be an artistIs there anything more stylistic, more personal, more creative than poetry?
No.
So do it your way.

Keywords: writing tips, writing inspiration, poetry, writing advice for poets, how to get published, how to be creative, how to be an artistThere are no rules
1 Use “and” or “but”
or repeat words
or get friendly with noun-ing (gerunds).

2 You don’t need a title. (Ask Emily Dickinson.)

3 You don’t need stanzas or line breaks.

4 Tell me why it’s cliché to use clichés.

Keywords: writing tips, writing inspiration, poetry, writing advice for poets, how to get published, how to be creative, how to be an artist Art is the leading edge. Of all of it. It’s creation at its most pure. So never let anyone tell you how to do it. You’ll kill it, stone dead.

I know folks will insist we need ground rules, somewhere we can meet and understand. And I’m here to tell you—that’s the art—the thing you make where people can meet you and understand.

A poem by Maggie Devers
Still
When I tell you you’re going to be fine
I don’t think you realize
just how fine
You’re going to be

To go on living
To go on breathing,
feeling
and thinking

In each way that matters,
You get to be

And I want you to understand the miracle of that.

This poem was written by a younger me that I've buried for quite a while. I won't call her my shadow side because she'll get mad, and really, that's not fair. It’s time I listened to her voice again.
A poem by Maggie Devers
During this year's lunar eclipse
I misplaced my shot glass
And over-poured my negronis
Or what's it called with port instead of vermouth?
It doesn't really matter.

We floated on together
I booked tickets for Disneyland
And wrote stories that confused me
The next morning
It doesn't really matter.

Except I woke up thirsty
Me, perpetually thirsty
Soaking up the water
And drowning myself in gin
Wherever you go, there you are
So they say.

So here I am
Pulled by the moon
Like the ocean's tides
Feeling out of control
In these rhythms of my life.

Five bunnies sit in a row facing a wall, observing a banana taped to it. The middle three bunnies wear small colored berets.

A poem by Maggie Devers
Afternoon in March, a Study
She’s been making miniatures of our furniture
With the intensity of a set decorator and a production date.
Accuracy is essential but there is room for artistic license.
Whimsy, whimsy is paramount.

Like Fabergé–
Where eyes are jewels
And cockerels spring from eggs to announce the hour

The sun’s coming in at a completely different angle
And I can’t comprehend how a time change makes this possible

I film her to capture the moment
Her, standing near the window
Drawing in the unkempt living room,
Like an artist’s studio,
And she asks if I’m taking a video
And tells me she needs help writing a note

She’s put her bowl in the sink, the red sauce comingling with the soapy water from my eggs
And we write a letter to the fairies
And life is simple

And I remember a bar of soap in a fancy box
That smells like heaven
And reminds me of my grandmother

Brood, a poem by Maggie Devers.
The three hens at my daughter’s school
Are oblivious to egg prices
Concerned with lunch scraps
And the stray termite
And their stair perch when the sun dips low

I wonder how they spend evenings and weekends
If they miss the sound of childsong
Or the Sunday scaries set in

I imagine they commune with their comrades
Offer jokes and such for trade
My daughter assures me chickens dislike the mud
And I'm inclined to believe her

Let this hold you close ❤️
A poem by Maggie Devers
There a thousand ways to say I love you
And we spend our life inventing a thousand more

We need something to hold in our hands
To take back home and say
Look what I found

Like the baby squid trying camouflage for the first time,
We’re all doing our best

These impossible aches are not new
Yet they never cease to amaze

We hold grief in the same hand as life,
And we go on,
For love.
