It's just an odd way to phrase it. Makes it sound like he had dozens.

"Many of his wives." How many did he have?

I wouldn't call it "delicate" so much as "stodgy."

Nope. The first act is a remake of Diabolique, though.

On the other hand, I've seen people get cranky about references to "corn" in historical fiction taking place in pre-1492 Europe, not realizing that the word "corn" used to mean any cereal grain and only comparatively recently became equated with maize.

It's not even artistic. Obviously they did it themselves, rather than hiring a professional porch pumpkin display outfit.

This movie always makes me think of Diabolique, so I checked to see if that movie has any sweaters and discovered that Simone Signoret as Nicole does indeed wear quite an attractive cardigan.
Black and white still from Diabolique (1955). Two women sitting on what looks like playground equipment. On the left, an anxious-looking woman in a gingham drress and white knitted fringed shawl. Her dark hair is in french braids, thus making her look weirdly like she's modeled her look on Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. On the right, a menacing woman with a short blond updo, wearing sunglasses and a black dress, with a cardigan slung over her shoulders (it is difficult to imagine that she would ever put her arms in the sleeves). The cardigan is probably fawn-colored, with narrow dark stripes edging the placket. She is knitting (possibly another cardigan?).

It's not so much the sweater as the way Chris Evans wears it.

He's a symptom of a much wider problem, the glut of opinion. There are very few opinion columnists worth reading, and he was never one of them. But opinion-generating apparatus is so entrenched now, throughout all media, that there's no getting rid of him.

My kid, now almost 21, still sometimes asks for word definitions. On the one hand, he could look it up himself. On the other hand, I am pleased that he considers me a good source of information.

I recommend Brenda Maddox's biography of Franklin. Franklin herself considered her work on viruses, which she did after she left King's for Birkbeck, to be her most important work. It's unfortunate that she's mainly remembered either via Watson's cruel portrait of her or by people reacting to it.

Thanks for the link. I'll take a look. I'm not sure if this is what you're referring to, but it's been known for a while that it was Franklin's work, in a report that Crick and Watson got hold of, that enabled Crick to deduce that the strands of the helix were antiparallel.

In our suburban school district, more than half of all kids walk or bike to school. Often they walk or bike in groups. My son biked to school from fourth grade through high school.

My phone died about 36 hours ago and so far my life has improved significantly. Some of the things I used to do on my phone (like accessing Bluesky) I can do on my laptop, but it's significantly less convenient and seamless. Time to get a dumb phone.

Star Trek: The Trouble With Tribbles
Alt: Clip from DS9 Trials and Tribble-ations. Sisko, in the storage compartment full of tribbles, scans and tosses aside a tribble. Cut to Kirk from TOS, standing under the storage hatch, engulfed in a mound of tribbles. Sisko's tribble falls down the chute and narrowly misses his head.

They stopped giving bears official nicknames a few years ago. Eventually, as nicknamed bears die off or leave the Brooks Falls area, there will be no more official nicknames, but it will probably be 20 years before they're completely phased out.

Janet @relfal.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
It's hard, because cam watchers know the bear nicknames, and they can't stop people from using them. I've seen fan videos and art with 910's unofficial nickname, Dancing Queen.

This is something I think of when people blame juries for "not believing the victim." It comes down to the way the case is charged and argued.
