Anyway I still can’t see what the set-up is. It seems like they are posing as legitimate literary festivals? Will they put me in their fake virtual programming for a fee? 💀 It’s so annoying to have to sift thru the slop cos I actually genuinely like being a part of festivals

Been getting so many emails inviting me to “literary festivals” - which I would believe if not for the tell that they used AI to compose their message🧍‍♂️ Fastest way for me to block/ignore you for reals

I am always happy to see and hear that comicsdevices.com is being used in schools and comics-making! Nice to know my random research obsession and the time I took to design the website are achieving their purpose 🌟

i'm legit almost angry at all the institutions that made people think their dream comic was unproduceable. Everything is produceable baby. The only limiter is how crazy you are

I don't know if these exact things have been covered yet, but @reimenayee.com has been doing a ton of research and cataloging of visual comic tropes over on comicsdevices.com

It seems people are often afraid of liking their own art work due to the worry of being perceived as egotistical or conceited, but you can still love your work and have a huge driving force behind that acting as a love for learning and improving. You can be proud and seek joy while you grow.

“Lettering is supposed to be invisible” is a little simplistic. If the letterer is doing their job w/ skill, and in harmony w/ the art, it elevates the comic even though you might not register HOW. Bad lettering is more noticeable because it drags the art & writing down with it.

The fun part with making historical fiction is that I get to learn about and include a facet of history that is underfeatured. In this case: the Georgian Era proto-gay/queer/drag subculture of the Molly Houses. 🎀 The World in Deeper Inspection webcomic update: alcottgrimsley.com/comic/c2007-...

I've been wanting to draw this scene with Alfred as truly himself (or in this context, herself) for so long. There's some old school TWIDI lore and design bits returning: the Ministry agent has their gold foil texture back, the phoenix calling card, etc. The style is sketchy! Cos they are flashbacks

You know what’s so funny, when I acquired this I knew I was on the ace spectrum (demisexual) which is a major reason I loved it. But only last year did I realize I’m fully ace. I may no longer be the editor but I can’t wait for this book to get to the hands that need it most (me included).

Yes I am aware! I think my point is not so much if in-comic citations are impossible, rather that sometimes the full implementation of them is blocked by physical+cost factors. Eg a 55 page BW comic is easier to add backmatter than a 330 page full colour comic

you should want to honor and compensate the people who empower and enable your work, especially when we’re talking about queer works. at some point we have to break the cycle of our elders, activists, and archivists dying in poverty and obscurity.

if we want to be treated with any kind of respect or rigor as an art form we need to extend the same consideration to others! ESPECIALLY right now when ai is flattening our collective work, the devil is always in the details & proper attribution matters more than ever

That's what I already do with my two histfic (web)comics! But apaprently some people said they don't trust the website/link to stay up and would prefer the printed version of the citations for posterity.

Oh wait you have in your blog! I am going to have to look into this a bit more deeply - I haven't really pursued grid compositions since it's not an approach I follow with my layouts, but lots of creators do and knowing the shape of grids is a structural device

Yeah! The larger role of the biography isn't as clear on the GN compared to the supplementary website; which is why there's talk about the GN instead being called an adaptation. It's quite a conumdrum, this whole situation @_@

In my experience (as an editor of several nonfiction graphic novels/memoirs), these issues have largely been navigated by instinct! Ben will tell you, like @natepowell.bsky.social and other cartoonists, that he developed a stronger sense of historiographical responsibility *while* making the book

It’s already an argument when I want to add a signature to accommodate the storytelling; it’ll be very hard to convince a publisher to do the same for citation. As much as I want citation/authors commentary to be standard in GNs, industry forces dont make it a simple thing

Reimena Yee 🦇 @reimenayee.com · 02/07/2026
With comics the physical reality of printing is more a priority since print production (paper stock, ink, binding, etc) constitutes a core experience of reading the text. That plus cost to the reader
170
Reimena Yee 🦇 @reimenayee.com · 02/07/2026
The problem is that paper stock and printing for (full colour) GNs are more costly than in academia so you can’t always guarantee that citations can or will be put cover-to-cover. For example: 1 of my GNs has a contractual 272 page limit and if it goes to 300, the printing quality is sacrificed

Reimena Yee 🦇 @reimenayee.com · 02/07/2026
I had always wondered how to produce multi-page (8+pages) citations together with the full-colour 300+ page graphic novel. The best I could come up with is a cheap tiny booklet that’s stapled to the front or back, like those supplementaries in a school textbook

comics are already a multi-discipline quagmire of conflicting word and art definitions. there not being any kind of established standard bumping up against a precise world of acknowledged permissions is going to cause issues without a little more grace

Also, to stick up for my fellow cartoonists, there is a lot of transformative work involved in taking material from a primary or secondary source and turning it into a page of comics/sequential art that is almost impossible to reflect in a citation

I dont take it as criticism! It’s just funny to me since TWIDI itself is a frankenstein monster of different eras of my ability as an artist/writer - it’s just blunt fact. That is very kind of you to try to formalise a term haha - hopefully the shape of the thing becomes clearer as I post more!

The thing is, I like digital delivery and digital ownership, I don't need stacks and stacks of plastic waste. But all of these companies turned what could be a social good into a ruinous capitalist hellscape and that's a problem that persists through the ENTIRE pipeline, not just the point of sale.

And! Academics and cartoonists gotta form a better understanding of each other’s publishing/creative culture. The risk of miscommunication is going to happen more as more historical genre comics get made. The thread below describes what I mean.

Us cartoonists who are working in the historical fic/non-fic space for years need to be better about passing on our best practices to other cartoonists who are new to the genre! Making historical work requires a different research practice and higher vigour than those of other genres
