Feeling a bit of guilt these days when working on hyper-customized personal apps instead of "hard problems." I'm a lot more productive at it now but pre-agents it was more of a skill-building exercise than it is today.

humbling to think that we can now write more software in a weekend than a medieval peasant could in their entire lifetime

not that I would ever recommend this, but you can "download" an entire Spotify playlist pretty reliably by grabbing a CSV from exportify.app and telling an agent to go wild with yt-dlp

I find myself building little specialized agents into fairly vanilla software more+more often. It's so cheap and easy if you can give your software an OpenRouter key. ex: music player has an agent to auto-tag songs, just a cheap model with a MusicBrainz search tool and web search, works very well

Why are database benchmarks always some nicely assembled TPC queries and not just an utter horror unleashed upon the world? Join Order Benchmark is just IMDB. JuniorVoluteerDataEngBench would be so appalling people would say “that’s not a realistic workload/query”… because it’s too realistic.

Couple weeks into using Astra for most things at work+home. I can't quite put my finger on it but it feels *easy* to work with; I don't need to correct it often, it's rare that it misunderstands what I'm looking for, it is proactive in a generally reasonable way.

We are about to see an avalanche of AI generated animations. I think all those low-quality children's animations can already be replaced, which suggests they will be soon. Opus 5.5 is incredibly powerful and cheap. The weirdening is accelerating. Like, this isn't even obviously AI.

Bike belts vs chains are interesting; it feels like a nearly-pure tradeoff between 2 different stats (efficiency, and ease of maintenance/durability). like in the case of e-bikes, you have a "do you want to spend X% more electricity to make your life a bit easier?" choice

TIL some tricks that make taildrop *much* more ergonomic: 1. can grant a user account permission to operate tailscale with `--operator` 2. `tailscale file get --loop` will save files to disk automatically, do that in a user systemd service zero-friction "send photo from phone to laptop" on Linux!
