Started using last.fm again after a decade away. I used it with iTunes for a very long time, and having that old history was really useful for rebuilding my music library post-Spotify

My approach for the photos is to 1) pass them through an image generator to get a stylized B&W image, 2) do Atkinson dithering on the stylized image. Works really nicely for landscapes and cityscapes, less good for humans+pets.

I was hoping to do this and... sigh. It will be purchaseable someday but it's unclear when. I love my Framework but availability of parts could be better.

The competition on cost at the low end is wild. In under 2 months I've moved to Luna, to GLM 5.3 Flash, and now probably back to Luna for high-volume tasks

Got access to Jev, prototyped the spreadsheet sorting+matching ideas and they seem to work really well. This stuff has been kicking around in my head since the CrowdDB paper 15 years ago, neat that it's practical at speed now www.vldb.org/pvldb/vol4/p...

This old @randomascii.bsky.social post is one of my most frequently referenced, I use it several times/year to remind myself how to write about performance randomascii.wordpress.com/2018/02/04/w...
What We Talk About When We Talk About Performance
Posted on February 4, 2018 by brucedawson

TL;DR – the phrase “90% faster” is interpreted by people in two different ways:

    90% less time
The speed (ops/sec or km/h) is 90% greater

I strongly prefer #2 but due to the ambiguity this phrase should never be used. The preferred unambiguous phrase should be “1.9 times as fast” (or “ten times as fast”, if that is what you were trying to say). To do otherwise is to risk being misunderstood by a significant portion of your audience.

“The future is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed”

This old Gibson quote comes to mind nearly every day. I have access to better budgeting and financial tracking than anyone using bank and fintech websites, because coding agents are great when given a bunch of CSVs. I’m sure fintech companies will catch up eventually, but right now we’re in an interesting in-between period.

Likewise, the custom filtering I do with Bluesky seems like a natural feature for any social media network once the cost comes down a bit more.

And this isn’t even touching on the huge numbers of non-programmer domain experts who haven’t yet realized that they can speak their own custom software into existence. That will change, and it’s going to be interesting to watch.

Feeling bullish on personalized social media curation:
Cheap LLMs open up new use cases

The price of decent models has dropped a lot lately, and that opens up some interesting new use cases. Bluesky supports custom feeds, and now I consume most of my social media through a custom feed which scores+filters every post by people I follow through Luna for about $5/mo. Nobody’s immune to rage-bait and doom-scrolling (least of all me), and this is a remarkably effective way to curate my social media diet. I spent a bit of time experimenting with even cheaper models on OpenRouter, but wasn’t happy with the performance compared to Luna.

Yeah, custom web app (Rust backend, Tiptap, yjs) for just my wife and I. Struggled to find something off the shelf that met our needs, so I knocked together something crappy 3 years ago and have been iterating on it ever since.

Been wanting nice Sonos integration for my local music collection for a while but it was too painful until recently. 2024: poked at the Music API docs, gave up b/c it was like a week of work 2025: Sonnet 4 got partway there in a few evenings but couldn't finish 2026: gpt-5.6-sol nails it in 20 min

After ~10 back and forths with Sol, a pretty good GTK+Rust systemd GUI. Like, I think most distros could ship this and it would be a big improvement on the CLI-for-everything status quo. Maybe the Year of the Linux Desktop isn't so far off after all

Plus a big investment in testing. Containerized test suite that exercises several different distros and systemd versions; good example of the "tests that you otherwise wouldn’t have written because they are too tedious" thing from crespo.business/posts/not-cu...

I remember when we were worried it would be able to persuade its jailers to release it from a locked box.

In hindsight, it was childish to think that we'd put it in a box at all. Not enough curiosity to pause to figure out what exactly we summoned before pushing it out into the streets to turn tricks. Bunch of cut-rate Fagins calling the shots.

It's a better story this way though. We can jump right to the action.

I don't know what will happen to us. I have no faith in the people in charge of the future, but humanity isn't going to change any time soon. I refuse to be incurious about magic just because we can't be trusted with it.

Yes, a million times this point by @simonwillison.net The term “coding agent” is really misleading in that it focuses on the process not the outcome simonwillison.net/2026/May/27/...
