$white text on a black background chapter 1 He hadn’t clocked the man as military. He was slipping— and trapped in a place where he could not afford to slip. But there were incongruencies here, too many fractures making up the whole, a baffling puzzle with too few clues that Jean had seconds to solve. There were the faint starbursts of scars around the man’s eyes, tinged pink and pale silver, the sign of power only bestowed upon high ranking officers. But the jacket slung over the back of his chair held no accolades. The uniform of a bottom rung soldier. There was a missing memory there, deja vu, the feeling Jean should have known this man. Once, a thousand years ago, at the start of his first mission in a new special unit, Jean had been handed a data chip of files of names and faces of top ranking officials, stolen from the enemy. Memorize them, they said, and get close when you find them.$

At the time the comment had near bowled him over, coming from Armin. Jean had been quick to snap back in denial, to shut Armin up before he said anything worse, damning himself and damning Jean by unwilling association.
But it stuck with him, suctioned on like a barnacle for the long ride, hiding in plain sight.
Are we doing the right thing? When Levi, stone-faced and unreadable as ever, but radiating tension had brought Jean in front of Zackly. He'd looked Jean up and down with ruthless intensity, evaluating, then brought him to the holding chamber in the bowels of the ship where a prisoner had been chained.
Eldian.
Already broken judging by the blood, but they still couldn't get him to speak, otherwise Jean wouldn't have been brought there.
"Read him."
Jean dove into his mind.

Emotions swirl all around his conscious mind, so fast that all he can grasp at first is *pleasant* and *unpleasant*, and only the most intense ones even come close to his awareness.
Those are mostly the bad ones, and in their contrast Jean somehow becomes able to identify some of them. Loneliness abandonment shame despair inadequacy shame shame *shame*--
He gasps, blinks, and finds himself on the floor, propped on his elbows with Reiner looking down on him, and his fists clenched tight in the long hair of the carpet.
Even so, his hands are shaking.
His entire body is shaking, his eyes burning with tears that have barely had time to well up, let alone spill.
"It's, huh, intense," Reiner says like that's useful information now. He takes a step forward, extending his hand.
"Back off," Jean snarls, disgusted. He was never one of Reiner's groupies, but even at school and even after the Rejection he knew the man to be strong. Confident. Unbending.
What he's just learned, what he's just *felt*, is making him want to throw up.
"So this is the blessing?" he demands. "The grand prize? *This* is what they write all those stories about? *This?* Why? Someone ought to tell them it's not worth it."

Jean liked sex.
He liked the no strings attached kind, he liked the little dose of ecstasy and daring with one night stands, and he liked hooking up with fellow troops while he was serving, for the small dose of shallow, harmless intimacy that was promptly shredded after, and the danger of being caught when all relations were supposed to be strictly prohibited.
He liked sex and, more importantly for the past few months, he knew other people— lots of other people— also liked sex. And would take what Jean was offering as an equivalent exchange for whatever material thing Jean needed in the moment.
Reiner, it seemed, did not like sex.
Or rather, he at least had no interest in sex. Or maybe, more accurately, he had no interest in having sex with Jean. Which made the entire situation a thousand times more difficult to navigate and even harder for Jean to wrap his head around.
Jean was a big boy with a hard heart. He could handle someone not wanting to fuck him. That wasn't the problem.
The problem was no one in their right mind knowingly let a man as suspicious, as broke, as Jean stay in their house, in their bed, aware he was willing to pay for it with his body and decide to turn him down.

Summary:
When you requested the time of a dragon, there was a price to pay if the time was wasted in the eyes of the dragon. And that price was a free meal. At the end of the ceremony, the dragon would either snap it jaws closed around Jean’s body and rip him to pieces, or engulf him in blue flames that would dissolve the chains, but leave his skin intact. Jean swallowed a lump in his throat as he looked around the plaza. He didn’t know which dragon would come for him. It was always a secret to the rider until the dragon stood before them. When Jean had asked why, Levi had told him it was because first impressions served to strengthen the magic in the bonding, but Jean wasn’t sure he bought that. The shadow of the walls surrounding the plaza slowly crept in on him, and Jean stepped back, as if it would devour him if it touched his boots. There was no use in thinking about it any longer. He had accepted to bond with a dragon, and only time would tell if he lived to tell the tale. Turning around on his heel, he marched resolutely to the gate and headed back to his quarters to prepare himself.

Since I’m sceptical that I’ll make it in time for today’s #reijeanweek2026 prompt, here’s a snippet of what’s to come. Prompt: magical bonds✨

The ceremonial poles made imposing figures in the fading daylight. The sleek iron painted crimson by the sunset, foreshadowing the events of the night ahead in an eerie way. Jean took a deep breath and fixed his gaze ok the spot between the poles. The sandstone of the plaza bore a large crimson, almost black, stain that told the history of all the men and women who had their fate decided in that very spot. At the mercy of dragons, even though they had made the first choice to be there themselves. To be where Jean would be in a few hours. When the plaza would be alight with flames licking into the air from torches and bonfires it would be his turn to be standing on that dark spot, waiting for his fate to be decided.
