forum.starmen.net – still kicking, but its a very old+public forum with a lot of posts, so its perfect for scraping. and unfortunately our software is so old that the only way to update it is either a) a huge amount of time from a bunch of preternaturally talented volunteer engineers or b) AI 🫠

this is why @rofish.bsky.social had to force people to log in to see the Starmen forums – attendance was on the decline because its an ancient forum, and now its REALLY declining because its annoying to access. this sucks!

This is the most remarkable story Ray Bradbury ever shared with me. He told it to me late one night, sitting in his den of antiquities and mementos. Take five minutes to read this. It’s pure magic. #Writing #Living #Creativity #RayBradbury #BookSky

retiree walked up to me in the parking lot as i was loading up my 2yo. "this is for your son. i made it." and handed me a meticulously crafted wooden car. life is real sweet sometimes.. curt winchester of tucson, you're a legend 😭🫡

look at the grain, the varnish, the perfect sanding! so much attention to detail. the wheels are sturdily connected by a wooden dowel. curt my friend, i see you, and i declare to the world that you are NOT messing around

Cabel delivering the goods as always - turns out Girvin was the designer of many of NOA’s iconic package designs from the 80s and 90s (I did not know this) They’re almost all bangers. As with anything like this I’m sure it was a collaborative effort, but still, these guys did amazing work

in the physical publishing world (while it still exists), the term "pack shots" is used to describe mockups/photos of the games, and in my head i always think of it as "pak shots". i wonder if thats a coincidence or if it descended from old nintendo marketing terminology?

one of the reasons AI is such a massive bummer is because it burns human connections. 5+ years ago when i got emails like this, i'd happily dodge a sales pitch to chat with an Earthbound fan. but for years now i've just had to ignore this stuff because its all fake. this sucks!!

email screenshot:

Hi Reid,

Hope all is well!

I saw that you ended up in the EarthBound, USA doc right alongside Shigesato Itoi and Gail Tilden. I was one of those forum kids who obsessed over every bit of game lore, but you actually wound up written into the story! That has to feel unreal.

After seeing that, I was looking through Fangamer and noticed you sell DTC but also into retailers like Walmart.... blah blah blah

here are some screenshots of the BOOTS QUEST expansion i've been working on. it's called BOOTS QUEST: BOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND. the release date is not finalized, but the stitching is all in place and the uppers just need shining -- stay alert

screenshot of two cartoonish blobby characters in a home with vaguely 1950s southwestern-style decor; an elderly blob in a white cowboy hat is saying: "heck, i guess i was too tough on them BOYS. who knows what trouble they're getting into without their old MA... what sort of AWFUL FOOD they're eating..."

a blobby video game protagonist stands in a desert full of tall grass and standing stones. the scene is suffused with an eerie glow, possibly connected to the strange monocle that the blob is wearing...

protagonist blob in a cave full of mushrooms is speaking to a ghostly blob, who's saying: "if you won't even listen to a ghost, then who can help you?" they're both wearing orange miner's hats.

protagonist blob stands in an eerie grey wasteland at night, surrounded by the glow of greenish lamps and clusters of hexagonal standing rocks.
