THE CHAFF PROJECT Hi! Are you cis in the UK and you'd like to support trans rights? Great! How: buy a trans flag pin and wear it in public. Why: chaff is an overwhelming amount of false positives so that when a missile gets close to the plane, it hits the chaff and not the plane.
A very simple diagram showing radar, a chaff cloud, a confused missile and an airplane. The confused missile is aiking for the chaff cloud and not the airplane.

Knowing a soil's texture (wt% sand, silt, and clay) is SUPER important for understanding #carbon, water, and nutrient cycles. Check out how the routine step of air-drying biases texture measurements, esp. in #soils with poorly crystalline minerals (data from National Cooperative Soil Survey #usda)
scatterplot of soil silt and clay content (field moist samples) versus the change in silt and clay content after air-drying. points are colored by soil order, and a linear regression shows an overall negative relationship (greater drying-induced underestimation of silt+clay content in fine-textured soils). Andisols (usually derived from volcanic ash) show the most extreme drying bias.
