It reached the mid 40s today and I feel like spring has arrived. The birds were so loud this morning. Crane, geese, red tailed hawk, eagles, jays, robins all making a welcome racket on the farm. #spring #birds

The Wildflower Association of Michigan is hosting their annual conference on march 1-2. It's a great opportunity to learn about native landscaping, see presentations by MSU educators, and connect with people in the horticulture and conservation industries.

I had heard of marmots and never knew that woodchucks were a kind of marmot despite them being so common in my area.

Just wanna remind folks that we allied with Russia to stop the Nazis. Some of y'all right now would cancel Churchill if you could, rather than partner w/ "problematic" folks who also want to fight fascism and stop Musk's coup. Perfect allies are never coming. The imperfect ones are showing up.

Who wants to bet that Trump's sovereign wealth fund also invests in Trump crypto and real-estate? Less than 48 hours after I said he would use taxes to pay himself and Elon he issues the executive order to make it possible.

One of my party facts is that according to polls, Americans believe foreign aid is about 25% of the federal budget and on average that it *should* be about 10%. The actual number is less than 1%. Foreign aid has long been a boogey man of the right, so it's not surprising they're vilifying it now.

I'm late to the party but happy #WorldWetlandsDay! Wetlands are so important for so many reasons, which is why scientists need to understand which wetland is which. Here's a quick guide I made a few years ago. #SciArt

A diagram titled There's more than one way to be wet. It classifies wetlands into two big groups - mineral or organic. There are three types of mineral wetlands - marshes: shallow wetlands with lots of emergent grasses, sedges, and rushes. Swamps: wooded marshes with waterlogged trees and other plants. Pond: shallow bodies of water that are not clogged up by plants. There are two kinds of organic wetlands: Bogs - acidic wetlands filled with peat that only get their water from rain or snow. Fens also have a build-up of peat, but they have water flowing through them and are less acidic. All five types have little illustrations showing their main features.

Nature centers, botanical gardens, & conservation groups are a great way to fill time with outdoor activities and learning. They also rely heavily on grants, which have just been frozen. Get a membership.

When the Patriot Act was passed, libraries got requests for patrons’ borrowing history. We were prohibited from disclosing those requests. We deleted and shredded those records and stopped tracking reading history for that reason. ALSO.

Now, it is going to be more important than ever for citizen science and volunteer work. If you care about nature, consider joining a local Conservation Stewards group. I've been volunteering for the DNR thru a stewardship group. With funding cuts and mass layoffs, they will need more manpower.

Wow. Bernie just nailed RFK Jr. over his newly-found belief in vaccines RFK founded an organisation called Children’s Health Defence. Today, it is selling onesies for babies with anti-vax messages. One says “Unvaxxed, unafraid”. Another says “No vax. No problem”. RFK should be done. (🎥 CNN)

Too many have believed for too long the Constitution is some sentient force that would protect us. The SCOTUS has and will twist its meaning to suit the whims of their Masters anytime it presents an obstacle. It’s just a document and it’s not coming to save us. We have to do that on our own.

Did you know fish make "beds"? Several varieties of fish, including large/small mouth bass, bluegill, & sunfish, can be found spawning on these circles in the shallows. Anglers should avoid fishing in beds, and while it might be an easy catch now, it can lead to a decline in future populations.

A circle of pebbles is visible in the shallow water. A fish has cleared away the sand for an area to spawn.

Chelydra serpentina - the common snapping turtle. Native to eastern North America. These guys live in fresh water and will scavenge anything from plants, invertebrates, fish and more. They play and important role to help clean up decaying organisms form their aquatic ecosystems.

A tiny, baby snapping turtle sits in an open palm.

A range map shows the turtles live east of the Rio Grande all the way to the Atlantic, from the southern coast of the US into southern Canada.

Winter can be difficult for a lot of people. Sometimes, self-care is talking to yourself like an angry toddler and making a nutritious meal you don't want and telling yourself that your gonna eat your veggies, take a bath, and go to bed on time because the sugar and poor sleep is why you're crying.
