New hobby - reading what my wife's high school students are reading. So far, so good. Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi was absolutely beautiful and heartwrenching. That's a book that's going to sit with me for a while. Now to go see if Libby has her other book, Transcendent Kingdom :) #booksky

I really enjoyed the Challenger book, so I picked up Midnight in Chernobyl by Adam Higginbotham from the library. I've warned my wife that Im going to be a fount of layman's fun facts about radiation, nuclear energy, and catastrophic government corruption for the next two weeks.

For your convenience, the Pride and Prejudice live-posting super-thread 📚
A drawing of Elizabeth Bennet, a lovely young woman with her long hair tied up nearly under a ribbon and wearing what is most likely a neo-classically inspired dress, looking pensive, two letters in her hand. Meanwhile Darcy, a handsome but stern-looking fellow, looks longingly at her. Also there is me, a little gremlin in big round glasses, skulking about in the background and hoping that they kiss.

The accompanying text reads “Trung reads Pride and Prejudice for the first time, somehow.”

The impetus for this had been our school trying to get a fledging soccer team going that had a lot of us non-sport kids interested in trying - and like we were awful, playing against kids who had been in soccer their whole lives lol, but it was fun at least and got our sedentary butts moving lol

Once, our HS football coach w/ a straight face explained to us how soccer was communist b/c everyone can play it - which might have been a nice talk, but then he went on to how it was a threat to America and thats why we play Football, a game of skill and American strength. I hope he's doing ok.

And on the flip side, things I really enjoyed seeing! - Grace's attempt to classroom control Rocky hehe - the wake up in space scenes - perfect mix of humor and horror - trying to show the audience some science and math lol - Rocky's voice and design - THE MUSIC ZOMG - the ending classroom scene :)

I enjoyed the movie, but - - The audience really misses Stratt's single minded determination & why keep a MS teacher on board, so the betrayal falls a little flat imo - Taumoeba escape is so rushed - I wish we had kept Leclerc & Antarctica - the NASA EVA suit, b/c Russia cant have anything nice lol

I'm 2 / 2 reading books because I saw an interesting trailer, haha. Finally got around to Project Hail Mary and then had a little cry :) I had to spoil the movie a bit b/c dammit, I'm not watching if the ending scenes aren't the same. Hopefully I'll get to see the movie this weekend :) #booksky

Today's the day! My last concert performance with this band - a lot of big feelings today
A silhouette of a dancer stands en pointe seems to be caught mid spin in a swirl of purple tulle in the center. In the upper left, it advertises "Symphonic Promenade: May I have this dance? A spring concert that I bites you to move, reflect, and celebrate." In the upper right is the band logo, Oak Lawn Band with a Texas flag and a pride rainbow bar underlining it. In the bottom left are supporting sponsors - the Beckles Dance Company, Resource Center, and City of Dallas Arts & Culture. In the bottom right are thr concert details - Saturdat, May 16th, 4-7 pm at the Moody Performance Hall in Dallas.

Octavia E. Butler, 1998:
From EARTHSEED: THE BOOKS OF THE LIVING

Choose your leaders

with wisdom and forethought.

To be led by a coward

is to be controlled

by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool

is to be led

by the opportunists

who control the fool.

To be led by a thief

is to offer up

your most precious treasures

to be stolen.
To be led by a liar

is to ask

to be told lies.

To be led by a tyrant

is to sell yourself

and those you love

into slavery.

Discworld QOTD, from Jingo
It was because he wanted there to be conspirators. It was much better to imagine men in some smoky room somewhere, made mad and cynical by privilege and power, plotting over the brandy. You had to cling to this sort of image, because if you didn't then you might have to face the fact that bad things happened because ordinary people, the kind who brushed the dog and told their children bedtime stories, were capable of then going out and doing horrible things to other ordinary people. It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was Us, then what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
