With 24% of Rochester and 12% of Monroe County lacking cars, thousands of us can't wait until the system improves. We rely on it today. The more of us who understand the benefits and the barriers firsthand, the more likely we are to build a multimodal community that works for everyone.

"But the handicapped need cars!" No, what they need are options in mobility. The tech exists to enable their freedom of independent mobility, but almost always what is lacking is the enabling infrastructure. Bike lanes and quality sidewalks serve everyone.

Gas prices have risen dramatically this year. For the typical driver, that's $65 more spent on gas monthly. If you're a typical F-150 driver in states like Alabama, Kansas, Mississippi, or Missouri, you're spending >$350 a month on gas now. We've got to give people other options.

If everyone needs to drive, everyone needs a place to store their car. That’s why we devote so much space to storage and even designate spaces with threatening signs to preserve spots.

Car dependency takes our most valuable commodity: land. 28% of downtown Rochester is parking (with more in the suburbs) yet are still congested at events. There are 2 billion parking spaces for 300 million cars in the U.S. Drivers have even preserved parking lots as landmarks to protect them.

Often outdoor dining in Rochester occurs a few feet from a parked car; you hear engines revving and smell exhaust. Village Gate offers a glimpse of a pedestrianized street you hear laughter and smell food. Yet because everyone mostly drove there, it still requires a massive parking lot.
