4 - New docs from J Walter Thompson detail this campaign that emphasized gas: “burns with no smoke and virtually no emissions” "is clean energy” “does not ruin the air we breathe" “can help us have a cleaner world”

Rebecca Leber @rebleber.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
3- In the early 70s, fearful the public was turning away from natural gas because of pollution, the American Gas Association had an advertising firm that worked with oil and tobacco cos respond. AGA launched a widespread “Gas, Clean Energy for Today and Tomorrow” campaign, new docs show.

Rebecca Leber @rebleber.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
2- Oil companies were in fact already aware of extensive, world-wide methane pollution caused by operations. In 1966, the head of a high level Shell study group wrote, "Natural gas is liberated in embarrassingly large quantities at oil fields.”

Rebecca Leber @rebleber.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
1- API was notified in a 1968 commissioned review that pollution from “oil fields” and “distribution system leakage” was contributing to carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere and that natural atmospheric sinks could be “overburdened by excessive emissions."
