Young people are not broken. They are hurting. They don’t need to be managed, but mentored. They don’t have to change everything about themselves. Restorative justice should be embedded in how we shape accountability and infrastructure that will get guns out of the hands of our youth and save lives

My statement on the Seattle Center shooting
I'm gutted by the news that yet another mass shooting has claimed the lives of our neighbors. Official reports currently estimate that two lives were taken and five others injured, including a two year old. My heart and prayers are with the victims and their families as they go through unimaginable grief.

In the midst of this human made disaster, I truly believe that every single act of gun violence is preventable. To me, honoring the memory of our neighbors means never accepting that tragedy at this scale is normal or acceptable. It also requires us to stand with the victims who survived and the broader community who experienced the terror of fleeing from gunshots. We can and will act to end gun violence in our community.

Over the next few days, we'll learn more about what happened and what policies could have been in place to help prevent this shooting. But for now, I am so grateful for the first responders who rushed to the scene to save lives at risk of themselves and to our entire community that is so resilient and strong despite this violence.
