We can argue over the sufficiency of the HHS response, funding, etc. but what is hard to deny is that Reagan, the great communicator, did not lead, did not make a major AIDS speech until April of 1987 when at long last after 5+ years he declared it “public health enemy no. one.” 20,000 had died.

There are always a percentage of “windsock” voters who go this way or that. They originally voted for Obama as a “change” candidate and Trump was the new “change” “charismatic” candidate regardless of the difference in their views. Could be just voters wanting the new shiny thing.

Biden did not remove Louis DeJoy because the Postmaster General can only be removed a board of governors. There were enough pro-DeJoy members to keep voting him in place. Biden cared about doing things by law. The president can nominate members but not fire, not that it would stop Trump these days.

Republicans blanketed Spanish language media w sophisticated ads in 2024 that resonated strongly with blue collar Hispanics on inflation, crime, border security (those illegals are getting handouts at your expense) and scaremongering about trans people. Democrats took that voting bloc for granted.

The song was “Travelin’ Through” for “Transamerica”, written for a movie about a trans woman, and the thing that struck me at the time and even more in the 20 years since is that she explicitly frames it around Christian imagery of transformation and grace. The campaign being eaten whole by Piker is overplayed. But El-Sayed should break as forcefully as Obama with Rev. Wright. Hasan’s toxic views shld be explicitly condemned. That he was simpatico enough w Al-Sayed to campaign w him can’t be finessed by pivoting or “he doesn’t speak for the campaign.”
