On second playthrough of Zero Company, this time with a male Hawks based on the default face with some minor tweaks, and what sticks out is how inconsistent the quality of the facial animations is between alternate face options, like pick a different face and it goes from solid to very derpy.

Getting women into military service via semantic loophole abuse, you say?
Fortunately, Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels had a cun-
ning plan, possibly at the suggestion of his suffragist wife: finding a
semantic loophole in the law and shamelessly abusing it. The Naval
Act of 1916 that created the naval reserve force divided it into four
components, three of which were effectively restricted to men. How-
ever, for the Naval Coast Defense Reserve Force component, the
law only specified “all persons who may be capable of performing
special useful service.” There’s zero evidence Congress intended
for this wording to mean women could serve in the naval reserve,
or that the Navy thought that’s what it meant when it was passed.
Daniels, however, didn’t care what Congress meant for the law to
say, just what it actually did say, and he simply started acting like
that’s what it meant all along. On March 21, 1917, Loretta Walsh
became the first woman to enlist in the Navy, as what was called a
yeoman (F). Thousands more would follow.

"I do believe that Donald Trump likes to win,” he said. “I don’t agree with his politics; sometimes I don’t agree with his policies, but that guy likes to win. He maybe hates losing more than anything I can imagine.”

If Hillary Clinton had won, Kennedy said he might have had a different outlook on returning to the battlefield. “I couldn’t imagine having to work like that for another four to eight years,” he said.

To prove that he’s ready to fight, Kennedy took TMZ on a tour of his home to show of the arsenal he’s accumulated over the last few years.

1948: Stalin seals Berlin, and the world has one month of food left inside it. A widowed American relief organizer (Meryl Streep) gambles everything on feeding two million people from the air, while a cocky transport pilot (Bradley Cooper) flies flour through a corridor the Soviets patrol live. A Berlin widow (Winona Ryder) trades ration cards for her children's escape, and a weary Soviet blockade officer (Stellan Skarsgård) begins quietly waving the planes through.

The author's aim was not to write a comprehensive account of the USA's involvement in WWI but rather to use the experiences of their own family members to serve as a series of windows into that conflict. In that ambition they have been highly successful, with the resulting narrative being valuable to a far wider audience than even that one family.

This is a book written in a way that is light and accessible to all without in any way diminishing the historical importance of the conflict or the period of time in which it occurred. The content is simple and clear without being at all dumbed-down. The services, times, and places of the author's ancestors were used skillfully to select topics on which to focus, adding depth and detail to enrich the discussion. The author's own military service is also used to good effect, providing interesting points of historical comparison as well as sardonically amusing reflection on certain patterns of military thinking that never seem to change!

I purchased this book for the library where I work for our military history collection. It is ideal as an introductory non-fic for older teen or adult readers who may not know anything of the US in WWI or who are not generally readers of military history. With Even a Dog Enlists...they are given a non-threatening (compared to some 600+ page dense-text WWI books we also have in my library!) way to read about the era with relatable experiences of ordinary people. Despite the quantity of educational information included, there is no hint of the textbook or feel of learning for a test - the engaging narrative in each chapter keeps pages turning with no effort at all.

There is excellent referencing in each chapter, providing a straightforward way for readers to then pursue further quality material in areas of particular interest.

Sean Smith has written a fantastic, dare I say important, book about a little understood period in American History. Smith even talks a bit about why the Great War has somehow missed the kind of widespread scrutiny that WW2 gets from the popular consciousness. All of this happened a hundred years ago, and yet the problems we see from 1917 to 1919 are very much still with us.

Everything is timeless it seems, for better AND worse. More than anything, I think this is the lesson no one wants to learn.

This book is fantastically well-researched, engagingly well-written, and an incredible mix of personal and universal experiences. We spend very little time worrying about the BIG things, engaging instead with the everyday struggles of the men and woman at war on behalf of the United States and the cause of freedom. Even writing that sounds corny to the modern ear, and yet, how else can we treat plain fact?

Do yourself a favor and give this book a bit of your time. It's a quick, easy read about an engaging, human, uplifting, and yes, at times gruesome period in history. You don't know this story; you only think you do.

Also: that cover is money. I love it!

Let's be clear about this up front: when the author calls this a "military memoir of a completely different stripe", he's not exercising false modesty. You won't find great heroics or corporate leadership lessons in this book. But what you will find is refreshingly candid and hilarious. I especially recommend this book for anyone who was attending or teaching at the U.S. Military Academy in the early to mid-90s; you will find a lot of yourself in this book and may get some insights into things you had no idea about. Veterans of the late '90s Balkan peacekeeping missions will also appreciate seeing their service reflected here.	JMJ

Pitch-perfect primer for how nuclear power works
Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2026
Author Bryan Wooster has accomplished a remarkable feat with this little book, taking the genuinely intimidating and complex topic of nuclear power and producing an accessible primer that anyone with a basic level of scientific literacy can digest. This is the work of not merely a technical expert, but someone with genuine zest and talent for teaching. Above all else it's pitched nearly perfectly; it's the essence of "enough, but not too much" for anyone who wants to learn more about this important subject without having to get a college degree or professional certification. Well-written and sensibly organized, it's hard to see how the author could have improved on this work.

Highly recommended.
