The United Mine Workers of America had fractured over anti-immigrant policies, but the Lattimer massacre shattered ethnic divides. More than 10,000 immigrant miners joined the union in solidarity. The Anthracite Coal Strike of 1902 won them a nine-hour workday and substantial wage increases. /end

John Mitchell, President of the United Mine Workers of America, arrives in Shenandoah, Pa., surrounded by a crowd of “breaker boys,” ca. 1902. From May 12 to Oct. 23, 1902, approximately 147,000 miners went on strike. They sought a 20% wage increase, an eight-hour workday, and an equitable system to check the operator’s stated weight of the coal they mined, which dictated their pay. The UMWA, led by John Mitchell, wanted official recognition to engage in collective bargaining. As the strike dragged on, anthracite (hard) coal production dropped and prices doubled. Because hard coal was the primary fuel used to heat homes, schools and hospitals in major northern cities, the nation faced a severe winter fuel shortage. Fearing a national catastrophe and social unrest, President Theodore Roosevelt decided to intervene. It was the first time the federal government intervened in a labor dispute as a neutral arbitrator, rather than automatically siding with big business.
