Oh, god dammit, I just discovered that there's a sequel. One more thing that is going to take me forever to read, because OF COURSE I picked it up instantly.

She is a font from which honor flows.

That came back to me with this because the thing about Gail Simone is that as much as I love her writing, there are lots of other comic book writers whose work I also love, but who I do not hold in such esteem. She makes the world bigger and better by sharing. She is not stingy or protective.

At one point Aral, the military one, tries to explain this, and describes her as a font from which honor flows. I always loved that explanation. It spoke to the idea that there was a good thing that all this honor was supposed to help with, and to her it was as natural as breathing.

They’re a joy to watch, at least in part because Bujold does such a wonderful job of letting you see characteristics in them which are reflected in their kid. But, relevant to this, she does a really great job of showing WHY each is so smitten, and have NO IDEA why the other one is.

They are wonderful characters, and it’s absolutely an Opposites Attraction sort of thing. She is brilliant, creative, progressive and orthogonal thinking. He is rigid, principled, military to his bones, from a warrior culture with a strong ethos of “honor”.

Lois McMaster Bujold is one of my favorite authors, and this just made something she wrote, which has sat in my head for decades, snap into relief. Her Vorkosigan books have two prequels that revolve around how the parents of Miles, the MC, met.

One of GS’s many stories includes one of comics dudes meeting her and telling her they should be writing her stories/characters - that they deserve to OWN them. This comes to mind as I see her celebrate someone else writing something spun off her own work. It’s generous and wonderful.

Unrelated upside of the supermarket- because I have not been commuting, I am way behind on my Audiobooks, so it gave me a chance to make some progress on @mytholder.bsky.social’s really delightful _The Sword Defiant_, which is why I had talking swords on the brain.

And when I then think about how perfectly LLMs allow us to not care faster, at greater and greater scale, for more and more important things? I genuinely fear for the sustainability of anything which requires attention and care. Grocery shopping is fun!

I used to think “By Thor, how stupid can people get?” but over time it’s really become “Great Hera, how little of a shit do some people give?” And, sure, in and of itself it’s a small thing, but if taken as an example of how little people can be arsed when they don’t care? It’s scary.

They have these huge signs clearly saying that the large carts go on the right and the small ones on the left. When this is done, the whole system works really smoothly. I walk past maybe 2 to 4 bays each trip, and despite the small sample, someone has almost always screwed that up.

It is a rare trip to the supermarket that does not leave my faith in humanity shaken. Sometimes it’s in the store, but usually it’s in the parking lot, when I go past the bays where people return shopping carts.

I actually have some notes for that, predicated on the 5e Hexblade as a warlock and an idea that, because D&D is bonkers, there exists somewhere a council of the greatest weapons in the multiverses the ones whose shards and shadows are wielded by legends.

As a GM, I absolutely love talking swords and smartass familiars, but if I used them as much as I wanted, I would be more or less running a violent, magical version of the muppet show. Which honestly sounds great, but exhausting.

There are many ways in which every billionaire is a policy failure, but the most corrosive and destructive way in which billionaires are policy failures is this: billionaires, despite being unelected and unaccountable, possess the power to control - and ruin - millions of peoples' lives.
The Warner Brother tower posed against a vintage map of Burbank, keeling over, tearing up a huge clot of sod and concrete. Standing atop of the tower, forcing it down, is a sad, spavined donkey in Democratic Party livery. Being crushed under the tower is the California flag bear, with blood pouring out of its eye and mouth.

“Claude suggested something and I wanted to share it” is an amazingly vapid starting point of a message. Oddly, not because what Claude says is bad, but rather because it makes it clear that they haven’t THOUGHT about it at all, but would like credit for thinking anyway.

It’s “just come up with stuff” but the way it handles scaling and zooming in does a really good job of letting people dig into what grabs them and create interesting synergies. That said, even if it’s not played straight, it’s a great basis for hacks. Ben has a knack for setting level mechanics.

Still arguing on this one elsewhere, so: "We own your off-hours creative product" approaches "We do strip searches because people might steal office supplies, maybe amounting to tens of thousands of dollars". It's an obscene level of overstepping. If you're used to it, you *shouldn't be.*
