In 1989, Orban rose to fame with speech at Heroes Square leading a youth movement calling for democracy & for the Russians to leave Hungary. Last night, thousands of youth gathered at Heroes square chanting “Russians go home” about Orban & his Putin serving, autocratic regime. Things go full circle

Orbán is extorting the EU, threatening to veto Ukraine aid to pressure EU to release funds it has suspended due to his corruption & rule of law violations. EUCO President Michel was right to critique such extortion practices last week in the UN context, but he should see the same applies to the EU

“Brussels to unfreeze Hungary funds as it seeks help for Ukraine”. Having briefly showed some backbone in standing up to the Orbán autocracy, the Commission appears set to return to Its old pattern of appeasement.
