Hey a games mention lol variety.com/2026/film/ne...
Win in Storytelling
Great stories remain at the heart of everything we do. We will invest in the ideas, creators, franchises and experiences that captivate audiences around the world and create lasting cultural impact. On the big screen, we are committed to making at least 30 movies a year, pairing original stories from today’s most exciting filmmakers with beloved franchises like Harry Potter, Mission: Impossible, The Lord of the Rings, DC, Transformers and Star Trek. On television and streaming, it means storytelling like Game of Thrones, Landman, NCIS, Tracker and SpongeBob SquarePants. In games, it means worlds like Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat; and in live sports, it means the NFL on CBS, the UFC, UEFA and March Madness, just to name a few.

Backrooms is a pretty solid metaphor for AI, but it's also a good metaphor for AI companies
The interview, like so much of what Altman says, is devoid of substance, hyping up how AI will cure diseases and improve people’s lives without ever really getting into how. In Altman’s very first statement to Guiducci, he marvels that “we have been seeing this exponential progress and we have been confused about why more of the world has not seen progress the way that we’ve seen it.”

Large swathes of the world have not welcomed AI because they’re the direct recipients of its downsides: data centers, slop content, useless tools being forced into their work and lives despite Altman’s claim that AI isn’t something that “happened” to people, and what jobs remain in the current economy going to people who can spew the latest AI buzzwords rather than the people who do the work AI steals from. If the backrooms are an AI metaphor, Async is the Sam Altmans, Elon Musks, and Dario Amodeis of the world, who can’t see why the people who keep randomly falling into its monster-filled hallways don’t think it’s the best thing to ever happen to them. In Phil’s conversation with Mary, he can only focus on the backrooms’ mystery and promise, even as he sits in front of someone traumatized by her experience there, and even as the Backrooms YouTube shorts show how Async researchers themselves have experienced its horrors. Phil doesn’t seem to understand–or cannot allow for–the idea that Mary might not want to be conscripted into Async’s vision of the future.

Waxed poetic about that Lanterns show and how its lowest-rated episode had the most to say about a bullshit aspirational platitude.
Black excellence is a term coined, lamentably, during the Barack Obama presidency. It’s meant to celebrate the Herculean efforts Black people make to succeed despite systemic and social barriers like racism, bigotry, and all manner of invisible tripwires that make success harder. Become a billionaire like Beyoncé and Jay-Z? Black excellence. Become president? Black excellence. Become a Lantern? Honey, you just might be a Black Hal Jordan in the making. But every time I hear the phrase, my teeth itch. To me, “Black excellence” lives in the same area code as white people calling a Black man “King” as a compliment—well-intentioned, maybe, but pandering as hell.

My issue isn’t the term itself but the mindset behind it. The idea that Black people must be excellent to be worthy of celebration, status, or privilege. That mediocrity is unacceptable. That you must be exceptional on whatever sliding scale the moment demands, doing twice the work for half the validation. Black excellence is almost never self‑defined—it’s projected onto you, shaped by other people’s expectations rather than your own. It's a prison where your only solace is toxic gratitude for platitudes over self-affirmation. Having John reject that fool’s errand plight as the main hero of a primetime DC Studios series means more to me than any roadmap superhero timeline.

I am for personal reasons very invested in a cure for Alzheimer's, and also for those same personal reasons pretty against being offered instead a self-driving golf cart
Okay. Let’s talk about the foundation, the OpenAI Foundation. It is the largest in the world in terms of assets, even larger than the Gates Foundation. And you announced recently, among other initiatives, $100 million towards Alzheimer’s research.
Yeah.
We talk about timeline scenarios and we’re starting to hear about them more often for AGI or nightmare apocalyptic events. What’s the timeline for curing Alzheimer’s?
Look, there’s many things I’m excited about with AI. Probably personally, the fact that it feels like within the next few years, some diseases can start to be cured. I don’t know exactly when Alzheimer’s will come. That will be a question for the scientists, but I expect real progress in the next few years for some diseases. I think this is amazing. And I have heard scientists who really understand both AI and health and biology say that a decade from now we could see just an unbelievably different landscape for what it means to get sick and stay healthy as a person. And I think this is awesome. This will obviously be one of the big areas of focus of our foundation. The top two in fact are health and disease and science and then AI resilience and helping society prepare for this change. But I think we’re going to see just extraordinary results. The models are finally smart enough to do this stuff. A model that can prove the hardest math problems can do a lot of other new knowledge discovery too.
And even in smaller ways, this zooms out a little bit from the foundation. The capability that anyone has now to do science and engineering is really incredible. I was with some college students recently and they’re showing me a hackathon project and they used, 6 wasn’t even out, GPT 5.6 to make a self-driving golf cart. And it was like driving around the Stanford campus. And when I was in school, hackathon project was like, you made a website that barely worked and that was pretty impressive in a weekend. And they just made a self-driving golf cart. Really, it was ordering the parts, it was 3D printing the actuators. It was obviously writing the software and doing the AI part of it. It’s incredible.

I'm only one question into the Vanity Fair Sam Altman interview and I feel I will die
This feels like a watershed moment. And I just want to know, Sam, what has the past month been like for you? Have you slept? Is your phone ringing off the hook? Are world leaders calling you asking for answers? Does this feel like the 2022 moment when you launched ChatGPT where something has changed or is this just an average week in the life?

A little bit of both, to be honest. I think the internal experience of this is we have been talking about this and preparing for this for the last decade in some sense. And we have been seeing this exponential progress and we have been confused about why more of the world has not seen progress the way that we’ve seen it. Because to us, the fact that this moment would come has been very predictable.

This Mexican Cucumber Looks Exactly Like a Tiny Watermelon
Say hello to the Mexican cucumber, the most adorable fruit (or is it a vegetable?)! The other weekend when I was browsing the tables at the farmers market I came across the most interesting looking fruit. I’d never seen anything like it. This little fruit was the size of a large grape, and looked like a miniature watermelon with its oval shape and variegated green coloring. Have you ever tried one?
