Alll of this. I started my career in construction, working office jobs alongside people who worked trades. Know how many 60-year-old guys I saw working as bricklayers? Doing demo? Zero. How many 50-year-old roofers there are? Zero. One reason unions fight for high wages is because careers are SHORT.

My parents managed it back in the 50s/60s, but even that was a strain. Probably more than I (the blissful urchin) could recognize at the time.

Not annoying at all. In fact I’ve saved the article for rereads. Apart from WotW, Time Machine, and Invisible Man, I’ve not read much of Wells’ writings. It might be interesting to read his speculative works in the order he wrote them.

Oh! I have a copy of Wells’ Outline of History, from my grandfather’s collection. Interesting to see the evolution of Wells’ expectations of the future (and makes me wonder what expectations my grandfather may have had at that time). But if Wells thought the suburbs a good idea, he was wrong!

Having a visual of how much debt we're in is always helpful as looking at $40 Trillion seems incomprehensible. And to think, with all this waste, we could have healthcare, free school lunches, affordable housing, etc. 1 red cup = $1 Billion! Get out and VOTE! #ProudBlue 📹: yobencohen

There’s something quite moving about seeing people as they were — over a hundred years ago — in all their color and subtlety. People in the past are just people, in the past.

This idea that the way we survive climate change is through hardscape, essentially militarizing our environment is EVERYWHERE and it is WRONG The way we get through this is connection, community and flexibility. To quote one Bruce Lee, "Be Like Water My Friend"

They seem stuck on what to do next with Bond. So, just do this. Bring back Daniel Graig as middle aged Bond, brilliant but awkward intelligence guy. Open with him waking from a dream that was Dr. No. Goes in to office to save the day in effective but mundane ways. Busting evil billionaires.

Colleague advocates genAI to automate “boring” rote tasks to “free up” time to be creative. YMMV but I’d argue that the rhythm of “rote” frees the mind to roam. “Free time” doesn’t magically summon creativity. Mental roaming during low cog load work can. So even AI replacement of rote kinda sucks
