The Trump family and administration's embrace of the Tate brothers and intervention on their behalf shows that whatever Donald Trump doesn't want us to know about his association with Jeffrey Epstein, the same vicious misogyny persists. The Tates are the new Epstein.
According to Heidi Blake’s thorough investigation of Tate in the New Yorker earlier this month, the Trump administration intervened last year to buffer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan from the consequences of their criminal charges in Romania. The Tate and Trump circles, she also reports, have overlapped at Mar-a-Lago.

‘Petro-masculinity’ is destroying the planet. Can eco-masculinity help save it?
She’s not the only one digging into the connections. A December New York Times report by Megan Twohey and Isabella Kwai quotes a text message by Tate, reviewed by the outlet, from January 2025: “I had word from The Trump admin that theyre on top of things. Ive been told ill be free soon but Trump needs to see me in Miami.” Two Trump sons, Don Jr and Barron, have reportedly cultivated friendships with Andrew, though the White House told the Times that it was not involved in the Tates’ legal matters, and the Tates’ lawyer said the outlet’s findings about Andrew and Barron were “fake news”.

It’s pointless to debate who’s worse, Epstein or Tate. Their monstrous misogyny echoes their respective eras. Epstein seemed a relic of the 1980s obsessed with clawing his way into elite circles and obsessed with recruiting and abusing pubescent to young adult women. Tate on the other hand, came up through the 21st-century machinery of the manosphere, which is in turn largely a part of the internet and the powerful men who run it. But both seem to define masculinity through the dehumanization of women and girls.

@rbhubbell.bsky.social is a nice guy but he's also a truth-teller, and here he is on Lindsey Graham, who signed up with evil after demonstrating he knew better:
Graham was offered a life of opportunity and promise. He initially opposed Trump, refusing to vote for him in 2016. But by 2020, Senator Graham was working with Trump to overturn the 2020 presidential election. According to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger, Graham called the top election official of a state that Graham did not represent, asking if Georgia could effectively “toss out legally cast votes.” (Graham denied the request; two state officials on the call confirmed Graham’s statements.)

By 2026, Graham said of Trump, “I am his north star,” a self-description that could serve both his epitaph and the judgment of history on Graham’s life.

But before claiming to be Trump’s muse, Graham sounded the alarm as to who Trump was and the threat he posed. In Graham’s own words:

“You know how you make America great again? Tell Donald Trump to go to hell.” December 2015.
“He’s a race-baiting, xenophobic religious bigot. He doesn’t represent my party.” December 2015.
“I think he’s a kook. I think he’s crazy. I think he’s unfit for office.” Fox News, February 2016.
“My party has gone batshit crazy.” Speech at the Washington Press Club Foundation dinner, February 2016.
“If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed . . . and we will deserve it. ” Twitter, May 3, 2016.
“[A]ll I can say is count me out. Enough is enough.” January 6, 2021, from the floor of the Senate, after the assault on the Capitol.
“I am his north star.” February 2026.
Graham will be remembered only for his capitulation to Trump. Whatever modest good he achieved as a member of the House and Senate has been erased by his aid and comfort to Trump’s anti-democratic lawlessness.

"It’s naively defeatist to assume millennia of patriarchy entrenched in law, culture, social arrangements and economics could be or should have been fully disassembled in one lifetime."
When it comes to the impact of #MeToo, it’s important first of all to recognise that it was not a deus ex machina event out of nothing and nowhere. It was a consequence of the preceding five years of feminist upheaval, which in turn built on earlier feminist work. That upheaval took place as a vast public discourse educating the public about the pervasiveness of gender violence and the fact that it very often does not unfold as “stranger in alley attacks pure young lady”. It got people to let go of a lot of the stereotypes and slanders that protected rapists by blaming victims or portraying them as incapable of bearing trustworthy witness to their experience. It created the editorial willingness to publish stories that exposed movie producer/convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein and a host of other abusers and creeps and unpacked the mechanisms of protection they employed.

That in turn resulted in changed laws. Six years after that 2017 upheaval, two women said, in a talk at the Practising Law Institute, “Prior to #MeToo, only three states had passed anti-harassment reforms.” They counted 70 workplace anti-harassment laws passed, in 40 US states and 3,000 pieces of legislation introduced overall that were impacted by #MeToo. A nationwide law passed in 2021 ended forced arbitration of sexual assault and harassment, giving victims the right to go to court. All this legislation created a lot more accountability and victim protection, but it’s the kind of consequence that often goes unnoticed. Unnoticed because it’s complicated, slow, incremental and, for the most part, legislative reform is not a hot headline.

The eager obituary writers tended to announce that #MeToo had failed whenever further incidents of high-profile sexual abuse were reported (though the very fact they were reported and in some cases successfully prosecuted may have been a result of these shifts). The single most important impact of #MeToo, I believe, is akin to what many environmental victories look…
