A squadron of American white pelicans in the October sunlight. There are both ring-billed and herring gulls swimming in front of them that really give you a sense of how big they are. #birds
A flock of 10 American white pelicans lit up by the morning sun as they swim on a deep blue lake. Three gulls swim in front of them, looking small next to the large birds. The forest in the background is a mix of green and gold leaves.

The brain coral emerging at low tide from the water in this photo is what we termed an ‘urban coral.’ That is a coral that has naturally recruited onto human-made shorelines, seawalls, and artificial reefs 🪸

We see the ride side of the head and neck of a roadrunner obscured by dry brown leaves and stems of a dead native plant. The bird is looking up. A right side view of a roadrunner standing on a wooden tray table. The bird is next to a white bowl with mealworms in it for the birds.

They won't be around much longer, but I'm enjoying the pelicans as long as I can before the head south. You really feel how big they are when they fly over your kayak. #birds

Well, it’s not the desert if you don’t see a roadrunner. This one dismissed me when he realized I was not going to give him any food this morning . In the second shot, you can see his iridescent blue green tail, and he is in the process of molting fresh feathers. 🪶

The transition from blue hour to light pollution hours in Seattle. I wasn't expecting the plane coming towards me at the end to take a hard right turn. Note, you can see the Loupe near the top of the Space Needle rotating. It's not hard to look at.

Sunrise from the kayak this morning. The waves were a little stronger than I expected, but still managed a lovely paddle. The birds were after rough fish left by one of the commercial fishermen. Everything is eaten.

Looking back at last week's spectacular sunset that I got to enjoy from my kayak. It turned what was otherwise and unremarkable, mostly cloudy sky and uninteresting shoreline into something incredible.
A old dry-docked lake freighter sits on the silhouetted shoreline against the backdrop of a brilliant sunset. It's streaks of orange and deep red, lighting up pillows of clouds with deep blue sky in between. The whole scene is mirrored in the still water of the Icelandic river in the foreground.

Obscure fact. Japan's geostationary view of Hurricane Lowell (at its current location) is very similar to NOAA's geostationary view of Anchorage. I'm guessing NHC isn't looking Japan's satellite. Hoping Lowell's upcoming right turn is a little less than 90 degrees.

It was such a gorgeous paddle that my friend and I were very reluctant to get off the lake last night. However, once all the harbour lights came on we knew it was time to go in.
Looking over the bow of a dark blue kayak as it enters a small harbor. The still water is midnight blue, the same colour as the sky, while bright white lights illuminate the boats berthed on either side.

They'll be heading north to overwinter in northern Hudson Bay soon. I'm going to miss seeing the belugas until next summer.
A bright white adult beluga's head just barely clears the choppy, grey surface of the mouth of the Churchill river. The bright white head and back of a beluga pushes through the blue-grey choppy water of the mouth of the Churchill river on a foggy day.
