RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 18/09/2026In my video on Montezuma’s Castle, I said I’d cover the nearby Montezuma Well Section of this National Monument. As usual, the pictures don’t do the size and scope justice. 100
RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Did you know that the Yavapai people have long held the belief that once something emerges from the bottom of this Well, it cannot go back, and that scientists today cannot explain why that is true! 110
RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 16/09/2026But Rangers recognized that the volume of people was eroding the site, not to mention that vandals could gain access. RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 16/09/2026It’s not a Castle and was named after Montezuma because in the 1800s Europeans thought it was built by the Aztecs. Long after its builders migrated away, this five-story cliff dwelling became a monument in 1906. For almost five decades, you could scale ladders to explore the rooms. 100
RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 16/09/2026You cannot look at this site without realizing how extraordinary and well preserved these cliff dwellings are. The builders (now referred to as the Sinagua people) began this permanent structure around 1050 CE in the modern-day Verde Valley in Arizona (Between Sedona and Phoenix). 110

RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 16/09/2026These bluffs and badlands are remnants of volcanic activity along the North Platte River in what is now Western Nebraska. First Nations people and animals carved the routes later used by wagons long before recorded history. 110

RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 14/09/2026I’d read about the failed 1851 Treaty at Horse Creek decades ago, but it was incredible to put it into context while visiting the extraordinary landscape whose resources fueled a lopsided land war. 100
RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 14/09/2026If I told you this passage in Nebraska was once so heavily traveled by California and Oregon Trail wagon trains that its history still applies today as a cautionary tale about conservation and stewardship, would you visit? RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Let’s talk Accessibility in National Parks! First, I’ve never been to a park where the drive-thru wasn’t worth it. Never. RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 18/08/2026So, we have GOT to STOP ignoring the REALITY that THIS exists and touches every person in every community somehow, someway, eventually. THESE are the decisions that decide your kid’s future. Food, water, air, folks. It’s all affected because it’s all connected. 100
RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 18/08/2026That we’ve built permanent structures that we want to protect. Even from the most selfish perspective, we have to be good stewards for our own survival. Not just long term either; the evidence is clear in the short term now too. 100
RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 18/08/2026What we should all be agreeing upon is that we’re all connected. If we’re not on fire, then we’re breathing the smoke. RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 17/08/2026James Cook and Red Cloud met in 1874, and paleontology even played a part – Cook mediated safe passage onto Lakota land for Yale’s O.C. RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 17/08/2026In 1887, James and Kate Cook established Agate Springs Ranch, and its history would be shaped by a fascinating mix of paleontologists and Lakota and Cheyenne visitors. 120

RaymondsWhere @raymondswhere.bsky.social · 16/08/2026It’s in the names of the sites - Carnegie Hill, University Hill, Beardog Hill and Quarry A. I’m sure we can credit that sharing to James Cook and family, who I’ll cover later. The understanding acquired from the 1905 excavations was significantly built upon in the 1980s. 100
