83 to go. The Canadiens open their season with a mature effort. It wasn’t spectacular but it was an intelligent road game. The win in Toronto in the season opener of the Call Of The Wilde for Global Montreal globalnews.ca/news/1207663...

Could say the same about Jean Chrétien/Paul Martin. In some ways we are still living with the consequences of their cuts.

There, of course, was another option. The party who forced the government to maintain CERB, implement Daycare, Dental & Pharmacare (most of which are either cut or will be cut) and who warned us about this exact situation. But alas, since the media hates that party they received minimal attention.

Six years ago, I was a crossing guard at Dufferin and College. At least once a week, some idiot trying to make a right turn from Dufferin onto College would be inches away from hitting the big fat guy wearing a bright blue jacket, florescent hazard vest and carrying a big red sign (aka me). 🤬

I knew @michelleshephard.bsky.social in real life. She is a remarkable journalist, but more importantly, a wonderful and empathic human being. Can't wait to read this profile.

“It’s not my pain; it’s their pain.” Michelle Shephard opens up to Nathan Whitlock about the weight of reporting everywhere—from refugee camps in Sudan to the cells of Guantánamo—and why she refuses to let these stories vanish into the void: ow.ly/qBB150YynIv
On the left: a photo of a woman with blonde hair smiling at the camera while standing in front of a leafy background. On the right: text that reads ““The cruelty right now Is norrific”: A veteran reporter recalls her most challenging assignments. Michelle Shephard has written from Guantánamo, Somalia, and Sudan. How does she cope with the violence she uncovers?.”

Twain in Vain Billy boy Maher’s old enough to get lost in the supermarket and his hateful anti-woke commentary isn’t exactly revolution rock. But his new prize proves that shooting your right profile and working for the clampdown can’t fail. by Maureen Dowd

Shame Canada couldn't win gold at hockey, but on the bright side, they've probably saved their nation from the imposition of 1000% punative tariffs on goods into the USA

By forcing the Liberals to maintain CERB, implement Daycare, Dental & Pharmacare Jagmeet might be one of the most effective NDP leaders in recent years. I suspect that if Charlie Angus (current darling of the center left) had done the exact same things he would be lauded as a genius. Wonder why?

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again. #Pinks #ProudBlue

I have often said (in the Toronto context) that since all city councillors get monthly passes for the TTC, they all should be required to take transit to City Hall at least once a month. Those who sit on the TTC Board should have to take it once a week.

Having been born on this day in 1957, I am somewhat susceptible to tv adverts we see at this time of year, ones that use the festivities of the 1970s as a means of evoking nostalgia for Christmases gone by. I think this one may have gone a bit too far however.

40 years ago, in Grade 6 we spent a week at the Island School, leaning about the environment. One night we went for a walk and we ended up with a view of the coastline. Still remember it. Aside from the CN/Bay St. Towers it was flat and beautiful. Now it would be so cluttered, a wall of towers.

The Yankees are on the brink of going home. I am tumescent. I cannot be a tormented but loyal fan of the Baltimore Orioles and be anything less. Also, Canada deserves something nice. We've been assholes to them for a while now.

Maybe it's because I'm Canadian, but it was interesting to listen to the latest @unclearpod.bsky.social episode on Contact and hear @jamellebouie.net get so close and miss the point. He talked about Independence Day and Contact as opposites with respect to American Hegemony. (Post 1)

I've long believed that everyone on the TTC board (and preferably the entire Council) be required to take TTC from their home to City Hall once a month. The reality of transit commuting would hit home and service levels would increase. H/t @shawnmicallef.bsky.social
