Hey! I’ll look into it. We pulled back from YouTube after some experimentation since it ended up being a lot of extra work for not much additional reach.

I loved making my own internal BlueRetro mods for my Dreamcast and SNES. What a fun project. I’m sure others will continue to refine and expand it, but I think you are leaving it in a great place. It’s insanely feature complete and polished.

Raygan Kelly @raygan.me · 15/12/2025

Thank you for all your work on this incredible project over the years. I was astonished when you fixed my weird edge case bug with the Napple Tale fan translation on Dreamcast. The entire retro gaming scene owes you a lot.

Hey, we’ve had some life stuff going on, nothing bad but I’ve been especially been crazy busy and I just haven’t had time for games lately, and Laura and Nate both just started new jobs. It does seem like our schedules are starting to cooperate more now though, so we should be back soon.

It’s the desktop Linux of ereaders. Impenetrable and hard to recommend but arguably better than anything else out there, and it turns everyone who uses it into an insufferable evangelist.

I use it a little, when I want to read scanlations from MangaDex or elsewhere. It’s a good app. But most of the manga I read I download as CBZs and read using KOReader or CDisplayEX. All of them have settings you can change to make them work better on eink, like disabling animations.

010

Raygan Kelly @raygan.me · 15/03/2025

Nope, KOReader runs on Android and a bunch of ereaders including hacked kindles and kobos but not on iOS. I originally used FBReader for the same reason but found I was never really reading on my phone and iPad anyway.

110

Raygan Kelly @raygan.me · 15/03/2025

One more thing I forgot to mention here is that FBReader used MUCH more battery than KOReader if WiFi was enabled. It’s syncing everything constantly with Google Drive, while KOReader only syncs like 2kb of progress data every 5 pages.

110

Raygan Kelly @raygan.me · 14/03/2025

One more tip is that the Palma is almost exactly the same dimensions as the older 6.7” iPhones like the 15 Pro Max, so a lot of sleeve or bag style cases for that phone will fit, if you don’t keep a case on it.

Here are some of my favorite wallpapers, hopefully Bluesky won’t destroy them too bad lol

3 cont) Map a gesture or button to bring up the eink center and mess around to get familiar. Settings are saved per app.

010

Raygan Kelly @raygan.me · 14/03/2025

3) Yes, but what I set it to varies a ton per app. For paged reading apps like KOReader or most manga I use HD or Regal, high contrast on, default color filters. For less optimized apps I mostly use Ultrafast or Balanced and mess with the color filters till they look good.

010

Raygan Kelly @raygan.me · 14/03/2025

2) I mostly just used Google Image Search and set it to look for black and white images. Depending on what you’re looking for, you can also Google “xyz line-art” or even “xyz coloring book pages”. I think images with firm black lines on a white background look best.

010

Raygan Kelly @raygan.me · 14/03/2025

1) Yes I used FBReader for months before switching to KOReader. They are both good. If you value a simple syncing experience and want to read on iOS as well, FBReader is a very good option. I switched mostly because I like the extreme customizeability of KOReader.

Most of the devices I’ve had have had this info easily available. 300ppi is high enough for me that text at pretty much any size looks sharp. The current iPhone Retina Display isn’t much higher, around 450ppi.

If you do DRM free ebooks, the built in reader is pretty good but I prefer KOReader. 99% of my reading is drm free epubs, pdfs, and manga cbzs in KOReader. It’s a bit of an investment to get set up and learn its UI though. youtu.be/HBKD7dh1rDU?...

There are lots of apps. If you’re looking to read web manga, Mihon works well on devices like this. mihon.app I’ve also used CDisplayEX. I KOReader is my favorite text reading app on eink devices, and also does a good job with manga though it has some UI quirks.

Raygan Kelly @raygan.me · 07/03/2025

Boox also makes larger android ereaders (I have the 7” Boox Page) that are arguably better for manga, but I use the pocket sized ones WAY more just because it’s easy to carry and use one handed.

110

Raygan Kelly @raygan.me · 07/03/2025

Really varies depending on what you do. If you are reading offline with WiFi off it can be a week or even longer of reading every day. If you are reading things over WiFi, like manga streamed from an online service, then you’ll probably charge it every two or three days.

030

Raygan Kelly @raygan.me · 07/03/2025

Wow Bluesky video compression destroys this.

230

Raygan Kelly @raygan.me · 07/03/2025

Here’s an example of some very small text. Lightning cable for scale.

140

Raygan Kelly @raygan.me · 07/03/2025

YMMV, I’m used to reading on a small screen, and eink is very sharp. Very small text is usually perfectly readable as long as it’s not on top of other very busy visuals. I do very little zooming unless there’s a busy double page spread.

010

Raygan Kelly @raygan.me · 07/03/2025

I just bought a Palma 2 (really only different in that it has fingerprint unlock and costs more lol) and it’s been pretty great for manga.

Raygan Kelly @raygan.me · 02/03/2025

I just don’t want to accidentally be responsible for increasing the SEO of the uploads on the internet archive. Archive.org is simultaneous a precious town commons and the great dive pizza place you hope nobody ever discovers.
