This is awful. But there's nothing 'now' about it: consider Abu Ghraib, any number of black sites during the War on Terror, and the terrible things learned in the School of the Americas.

I just gave a talk referring to this! It goes back even further. Carter wrote a GQ profile (May 1984), describing Trump's hands as "small and neatly groomed". Trump was so incensed he tried to buy all the copies of that issue. www.independent.co.uk/news/world/a...

Rather makes me wonder whether they thought you were a real human. Some people seem to think they’re just yelling at robots. It’s so easy to think that you needn’t try to interact when it’s just disembodied text.

It is. In the other one you'd be hounded. Not sure what's the story is here, but I have long concluded that social spaces are poor venues for reasoned debate.

It's finally published! "Visual and Linguistic Dogwhistles" by @jennysaul.bsky.social & me is available online. Because it's me, we talk about Panofsky, alchemy, Barthes and Panzani, and ancient dudes masturbating on statues. Because it's Jenny, it all makes sense. doi.org/10.1093/oxfo...

I'm very pleased that the new SComS has been published: it's all about image clusters, and the articles are great. In it, I propose a modernised form of iconology that uses artificial intelligence to help query medium-sized datasets of images. www.hope.uzh.ch/scoms/issue/...
