Gavin Newsom signs law overhauling local zoning to build more housing
After weeks of waiting, California’s governor signed a bill that will allow mid-rise apartment buildings near major transit stops in California’s biggest metro areas.

Authored by Sen. Scott Wiener and championed by YIMBYs, this is one of the most significant zoning reforms in modern California history. It's a bold step toward the future of our cities.

- Increased Housing Supply: A direct strategy to tackle the state's affordability crisis through upzoning. - Smarter Growth: Reducing sprawl and long commutes by focusing development where infrastructure already exists.

By allowing mid-rise apartments near rail and bus hubs in 8 urban counties, the law directly promotes: - Transit-Oriented Development: Prioritizing people over cars and building vibrant, walkable communities.

I learned all this and much more in a free workshop hosted by @beta.nyc on Monday. Fortunately, they're hosting ANOTHER workshop on Friday! If you want to learn the nuts and bolts of what it means for governments to be transparent and make data-drive decisions this is a great place to start!

It turns out this is just another step in a long long history of NYC's efforts to make governing transparent. For over 150 years they've published a daily newspaper called The City Record that gives a detailed view of what the city's many departments are doing.
