It’s hard, when A) legislators don’t understand the tech. To be fair, most CS faculty don’t even understand generative AI and its limitations. and B) when AI companies lobby and threaten governments with taking themselves and their (so far nonexistent) billions of revenue and taxes away

Indeed. For those who have worked a lifetime to train in creativity, whether it’s in the visual arts or in story telling, asking them to use a genAI model “for efficiency” is like placing them into handcuffs and asking them to point at one of a few hundred templates with their chin.

Hello new followers! I’m Zara, an artist working on Magic: The Gathering & drawing & painting for myself in my free time. Here are some of my favorite painting I’ve done 🖤

“Stasis” is a portrait painted by the artist Zara Alfonso, and is the first piece in her series about invisible illness. A portrait painting of a girl with skin so pale she’s almost translucent, her lips are tinged blue and she gazes upward through seemingly unseeing eyes. Pale moths and winged insects cover the expanse of her face and body, blending into her skin in places.

“Tenacious Underdog” is a painting by the artist Zara Alfonso, done for the Magic: The Gathering Streets of New Capenna set. A boxer lounges over the corner of the ring, he’s bruised but grinning as a figure from the cheering crowd hands him a glass potion bottle filled with red liquid.

“Bereaved Survivor” is a painting by the artist Zara Alfonso, done for the Magic: The Gathering Innistrad Midnight Hunt set. A young girl from Innistrad mourns in front of the grave of her late sister, in her hand she clutches a locket. It’s late autumn and the weather is overcast and gray, on the edge of the first frost.

“Medusa Portrait” is a portrait painted by the artist Zara Alfonso. A portrait of a young Medusa who looks peacefully towards the viewer, her hair is flowing mass of thick iridescent dark indigo snakes tied up in a head wrap.

This piece took me a while to complete. During the creation of this painting I switched my studio, complete many jobs and projects and dived into fight with AI, so it took many hours “after work” and “between jobs” to finalize this piece 😅 Hope you like it!

“The Death I Bring” Pencils I made on a moleskine sketchbook page back in 2016.

The robed woman stares at us intimately, with a few bits of branched and a dark background makes the scene a bit ominous but graceful body positioning makes the scene beautiful as well. The artist (me) really likes this kind of imagery.
