Sánchez-García et al. investigated colonization of invasive buttonweed in Europe. Results show three lineages with an ancient divergence, suggesting either multiple introductions or a single introduction with multiple lineages. 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/gbe/evag124 #genome #evolution #invasive
GBE | Genomic Footprints of Selfing, Introduction History, and Long-Distance Dispersal in an Invasive Alien Plant

Cotula coronopifolia (yellow flowers) growing in Nedra Sandby on the east coast of Öland in Sweden, where it has displaced the native vegetation. In this study, we combine population genomics and phylogenomic inference to understand the colonisation history and successful invasion of this alien plant. Plants also think "better alone than in bad company." In our new GBE paper (part of my thesis), we show how reproductive assurance through selfing combined with waterbird dispersal shaped the invasion history and genomics of Cotula coronopifolia 🌱🦆🧪 DOI: doi.org/10.1093/gbe/... #PopGen

Researchers have identified superparamagnetic macrophages in the livers of rock pigeons to be crucial for magnetic sensing. The finding uncovers an unexpected role for immune cells in sensory perception and may fundamentally change our understanding of animal navigation. scim.ag/4nTQ3nq
How animals sense Earth’s magnetic field is one of biology’s enduring mysteries. Researchers have now identified superparamagnetic macrophages in the livers of rock pigeons (Columba livia) to be crucial for magnetic sensing. The finding uncovers an unexpected role for immune cells in sensory perception and may fundamentally change our understanding of animal navigation.

No. What happens in Doñana DOES NOT STAY in Doñana. After more than two years of work, we’ve published an article demonstrating that the poor condition of Doñana negatively affects waterbirds across the ENTIRE continent! Thread below! 🧵 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Something that has been slowly simmering for the past 2.5 years is so about to come out. This is the PhD chapter I am most proud of; It wasn't planned. The hypothesis emerged after years of field observations in Doñana but I did not have the time or means to test it.
