Please tap this link ASAP. This is a huge deal to me. I live in a coach house (picture not mine, but similar) that is needlessly illegal to build now. It fits my 3 roommates and I for a reasonable price in a walkable neighborhood. It’s great, but OUTLAWED! These bills would fix that statewide.

Awesome to see @adanisanchez.bsky.social in CapFax this morning! @abundanthousingil.bsky.social @parkingreform.org
Champaign-Urbana will benefit most from the People Over Parking Act, according to Adani Sanchez, a volunteer for the statewide advocacy group Abundant Housing Illinois.
The bill would prevent local governments from enforcing minimum parking requirements on a development project within half a mile from a public transit stop.
Right now, every housing unit that's built in Champaign County is required to have its own parking spot for every two hundred square feet of floor area. But for many people who don't have a car, these parking spots aren't necessary, and they take up space that could be used to construct more housing.
"The measure would mean that housing developers would not be given an arbitrary number of parking spots to build, but rather "can decide for themselves what the market need is," Sanchez said. "This is going to be another way to encourage people to use the transit that we already have."

Lakeview is one of Chicago’s densest neighborhoods. But it still has too many blocks where it is illegal to build anything other than a detached single family home. See those bright green areas on the west side? That’s where new apartment buildings are banned.

This is a great idea. Illinois needs fewer governments. Why, you ask? Because we have SO MANY that there is no precise way to count them. The more governments, the harder it is to for the public to pay attention. And without robust oversight, we’ll never rein in corruption.
The more the messier

There are so many units of government in Illinois that people can't even agree on the total because of differences over what technically qualifies as a government body. The U.S. Census Bureau says 6,930, while the Illinois Department of Revenue, which tracks governments authorized to levy property taxes, reports 6,042. The state comptroller's office lists 8,529, and a study by the Civic Federation tallied the number at 8,923 as of 2019.
Regardless of the exact answer, the number of governments in Illinois outpaces that seen in bigger states, including Texas (which has 5,533, according to the Census Bureau), Pennsylvania (4,851) and California, a state with a population three times the size of Illinois but half as many local government units.
Much of this multiplicity is owed to the state's previous constitution, written in 1870. That constitution placed borrowing and taxing limits on many municipalities and counties, which elected leaders in those communities got around by simply creating new units of government with their own taxing and borrowing authority.
