The US ceased to be a reliable NATO ally on January 20, 2025. The last week has simply made that undeniable. The only question now is whether European leaders accept it. The USA will not now defend Europe from Russia. That is reality. Everything else is hopes and dreams.

According to UK intelligence, Russia has suffered 950,000 military casualties since Feb 2022. Approx 160,000 of those losses occurred in just the first four months of 2025, while Russia didn't avance significally on the battlefield (1)

We really need to move beyond focussing on optics in understanding Trump’s positions on the war. That sit down with Zelensky in St Peter’s was almost certainly meaningless. Trump has been ruthlessly consistent in one thing—pushing Russia’s interests.

I sent out this piece yesterday. Trump's final plan is basically Russia's plan, which would legitimize Russian conquests and provide Russia the best possible situation in which to rebuild its military--while giving Ukraine nothing. Europe needs to stand with Ukraine now.
