I don’t support tiger skin rugs. 🐅 But I do support tiger skin mosaics that look like a rug. (Museum of Bardo, 200-399 CE, image by Roberto Piperno).
Museum of Bardo: "panther skin rug" from Carthage (IIIrd/IVth century); a mosaic portraying a Barbary lion can be seen in the image used as background for this page

A #Roman glass 'circus beaker' (so called because the animals portrayed on it - a lion & a big cat - would mostly have been seen in the arena), found in a burial in Himlingøje (Denmark) - did it get there through trade, as war booty, or a diplomatic gift, maybe..? #Archaeology #AncientBlueSky

A few people asked me about the image I used for the AAH this year. Years ago, @candidamoss.bsky.social and I went to the Met for the ‘Worlds Together, Worlds Apart’ exhibition and I fell in love with the Aedicula for Aglibol and Malakbel that points to a Palmyrene community in third century Rome. 🤝
Aedicula for Aglibol and Malakbel

Musei Capitolini, Rome
This aedicula featuring the Palmyrene sun and moon gods Malakbel and Aglibol attests to the presence of a Palmyrene community in third-century Rome.
Malakbel wears Parthian-style clothing (trousers, a tunic, and an overcoat). Aglibol is dressed in a Roman-style cuirass and holds a lance; a lunar crescent is visible behind his head. The pair shake hands in front of a cypress tree that represents Malakbel's sacred grove in Palmyra. The inscriptions in Greek and Palmyrene Aramaic follow the Palmyrene custom of emphasizing the dedicator's lineage and record that he also dedicated a silver statuette, an exceptionally lavish offering.Handshake Aedicula for Aglibol and Malakbel

In Belfast for the week to take a very short beginner’s course in ancient Greek at Queen’s University. Today, the alphabet, diphthongs, diacritic marks, & first transliterations. Homework tonight: more transliteration (of English words received from the Greek more-or-less whole - eg ambrosia). 📚
A view of the inner court at Queen’s university, showing a very collegial two story red brick building. My Greek primer, “Athenaze: An Introduction to Ancient Greek”
My course schedule - two sessions daily along with two guest lectures (and a film for fun).
