Parents transmit unspoken information about interacting with persons with disabilities. This mom did it right! I thanked her for it. Ugly laws were on the books in places in the US until the 70’s. It was illegal to be visibly disabled in public. We can’t go back!

I told her about how much I love my chair and that I named it. Her sister who appeared to be about 6 was eager to join in the conversation. The mother didn’t look uncomfortable, bristle, or try to shoo them away.

Last weekend I was at a store. I was in my power wheelchair. A mother with two young daughters was in my section. One of the girls who appeared to be about 8 or 9 was mesmerized by my chair. I could see that she was super interested in it in a positive light.

Part of why Disability Pride Month is important is to have conversations about disability. To remove the mystery or stigma. I may sound like I am bashing Mr O’Donnell but far from it. If someone whom I admire as a broadcaster is having a hard time, then many others do too.

I’m a fan of Lawrence O’Donnell on MS Now but I have to say that I was taken aback at his shaky performance at the start of his interview with Iowa’s next Senator Josh Turek. Lawrence was visibly uncomfortable talking about Josh being a person with disabilities and wheelchair user.

It wasn’t until my needs were so high that I finally quit beating myself up for being weak and substandard. There is little that can be done about a mind and body trying to succeed in a world that was not designed with me in mind.

I felt guilt when my mind or body didn’t act like the non-disabled people around me. I struggled with life on hard mode. I raised 4 daughters who are raising their own children and living their authentic lives. I did this without the privilege of having a body and mind that didn’t require support.

Second, CMS is imposing a six-month nationwide moratorium on new Medicare enrollment for durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) suppliers. The moratorium covers initial enrollment applications and changes in majority ownership. Existing enrolled suppliers can continue operating. CMS frames this as building on $1.5 billion in suspected fraudulent DMEPOS billing they stopped last year.

The core problem is access. DMEPOS covers wheelchairs, prosthetics, oxygen equipment, insulin pumps, catheters, hospital beds, walkers. Disabled and elderly people depend on this equipment to live. A six-month freeze on new supplier enrollment means no new suppliers can enter the Medicare market anywhere in the country while demand stays the same. If your current supplier closes, downsizes, or stops serving your area, the pool of available suppliers is frozen. Blocking ownership changes compounds this: if a supplier owner retires or wants to sell, the buyer can't take over the Medicare enrollment, so the business may simply shut down rather than transfer.

Oz justified going nationwide by saying that if they shut down South Florida (where he says the fraud is concentrated), fraudsters would "flee to California and to Texas." So the logic is: the problem is regional, but the moratorium is national as a prophylactic measure. That means every legitimate new DME supplier in the country is locked out of Medicare for six months because of fraud patterns Oz located primarily in one metro area.

I will never forget what I was doing: I was part of the team leading phone banks curing ballots for Georgia. We had been doing this work since late November. Team Relentless is what we called ourselves. We had been at it all day. We had a brief chance to catch our breath between shifts.

Many of my friends like to share where they were when the towers fell. We were victims of a senseless attack on that day. 5 years ago our entire country was a victim of another attack and the call quite literally came from within the house… you know which house.
